Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey, thanks for swinging through guys! Yah, it is a good feeling to have that deck down and epoxy going on! It is great to see things take shape some.

This morning I sanded with 80 grit, cleaned with Acetone, laid down another coat of epoxy and then put it in the oven.:D

Hey, I hate to break it to you guys but tomorrow is Monday, sorry.

hello i have just spent almost 2 hrs starting at the begining of your Islanderventure, I think your border line nuts but it gives me a much better attitude about mine. Mine didnt start out that rough, so i have been using it, but some day I want to do a complete restoration like your doing thanks for the modivation. mine is a 78 white in and out. i did black carpet on the floor and tan on the seat boxes. not sure if i would do it the same next time but it doesnt look to bad.

Hey, welcome kf! Yah, I think many would agree with your assessment.

Hey swing by the Starcraft section and post up some photos of your rig, I'm sure the guys would love to check it out.

Well, when you are ready to rebuild the fine gents who hang around here I'm sure would be a huge help to ya.

Bad news, it snowed again.

Good news, it snowed enough to close down schools!

So, at 4:39am I got word, and headed out the the Islander. Light sand, clean and coat number 3 is in the oven.:)

Does anyone know a good marine mechanic that is comfortable with the 400 stringer. I had water in it. Not much but still think I should put new seals in it. Also it needs a new boot seal. Is it as difficult as people make it sound. I don't have huge budget but I want to make sure everything is right. My 8 and 3 year old will be fishing with me. Its a '78

OOOOOoooooooooo, you have the OMC Stringer don't ya? Yah, you can see what I decided to do with mine. I think I would recommend the same to just about anybody keepfishen. Especially somebody on a budget!

If you are bent on keeping it post up your questions over here...

Those guys are very sharp and very helpful. There are a handful that are super knowledgeable with the Stringer Drive. Please be prepared for doom and gloom though. I have 4 very busy marine tech dealers in my area and none will even hardly bother with the stringer anymore.

You can find most parts you need on eBay. I think most guys who run the stringer learn along the way and end up doing the maintenance themselves as the majority of techs just won't work on em anymore.

If you decide to go with a whole new driveline down the line, I am totally convinced that buying a complete donor boat, trailer, engine, drive package is the best way to go.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

So I was thinking it was just about time for me to do the final touch up and assembly work on that trailer...

Uh, I guess I'll work on something else.

I'm glad you guys in the tri-cities area signed up for that snow, we didn't get any here:D

I'm really glad that I still have my boats indoors:facepalm::rolleyes:

My epoxy has been curing all week too, nice that you got an early start today. You can probably get another coat down in a few hours with the heat flowing:)

Seriously? Nothing down there????

Man, I am looking at 6 to 8 out there and it's still coming down!

Yah, that heat I am pumping in there makes all the difference in the world! Helps the epoxy lay down very well and cure time is about a day or two depending on how well I maintain the fire. Nice!

No snow in Allendale either, just a little ice, and it wasn't even that bad scraping the car this morning, but like Jas, my wife got the morning off (AM Kindergarden teacher).

We will see about that, I go to the dentist in an hour and half:(. He started a root canal last week and then going to do a crown, but my tooth may be cracked:facepalm: and if it is then it has to come out and get fitted for a bridge:eek:. So I may not be feeling all that perky here in just a little bit, we shall see.

OK, couple steps closer on deck completion....

First I installed the fore most seat box base, bedded in PL...

Then I sanded, cleaned and laid down the 4th and final coat of epoxy. As I went along, sand went down for the texture...

So ironic that all along I have been diligently sanding, carefully cleaning with Acetone, picking out small specks of fuzz and what not, only to lob had fulls of sand into my work:rolleyes::facepalm:

Have a great Sunday guys!

LOL.

Looks nice. Hey, since you're up anyway, can you come watch my 3 year old? I'd like to go back to bed.
