I think you should have put a Plexiglas floor in to show off your artwork.

Now that would be different. Oh you would get a good look 'cause your face would be planted on the deck more than your feet. Plex is kinda slick when wet. Of course you northerners are used to walking on ice anyway.
Sure would be fun to watch though.:D

I really liked all the pretty colors think the Plexiglas floor would have been great :) If only I had started saving those laundry soap jugs when the kids were all still at home could have floated an ocean liner by now. I think I'll have to start soldering a bunch of empty beer cans together for flotation tubes (only resource I have available these days) of course with Michigan deposit would be expensive flotation:cool:Great progress and the floor looks amazing!!

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for stopping by fellas! Not much to report lately, had some things to tend to. I've plugged away at a few small things here and there, nothing big. I kinda wanted to wait till the deck seams fully cure before I start sanding things out smooth.

Today, I was hanging in the shop class chewing the fat a little. I was kicking around the idea of making a fish box out of aluminum rather than using that cooler. See, once the cooler is in, plus the plywood, plus the cushion it'll be a little high from the deck. Maybe uncomfortably high? I'd build the alum fish box quite a bit shorter if I were to do it. It's not that big of a deal but just chewing on it anyway.

Hopefully I can accomplish a few things this weekend.

Oh ya, it's snowing out again too:rolleyes:

Keep that snow on your side of the mitten! Mine is slowly melting.

I loved getting the deck down. Made me feel like the boat was going to be finally completed one day :)

Yah, I kinda think that snow I saw yesterday was winters last stand. I believe the next time I see the white stuff coming from the sky will be after I have had myself a big ol turkey day dinner! I might even float this here Islander some time between now and then:D

Two great things to look forward to:)

Yah, my gut tells me I am in a sort of a different rebuild mode now. I am pretty dern happy to have that part behind me.:)

Great progress there Jas, it's looking good. That's a pretty bold statement about the snow, considering the winter we have all had. The weather "oracles" are all saying to expect a couple of late spring snow storms, WOHOOO.

I dunno Glenn, I think the statement about getting this rig in the water in the year 2011 was a waaayyyy gutsier statement.

Shoot, you've got better odds seeing snow in July than to see this Islander in the water:rolleyes::facepalm:

I know you're not making any predictions, but I will! I'm seeing a July splash in your future... and yes, this July! :D

Deck looks great and is strong enough to support an elephant, or a hot tub...

Congrats on the completed deck stage, it's all downhill now!

Snow in July is not that rare up here, so I hope that doesn't reflect on your July launch!!!
Thursday was the warmest day we have had so far this winter +8c 46f, woke up yesterday morning -16c wind howling, left for work at 5 am and drove into a blizzard. Took me 5 hours to do what should have taken 3. Winter sucks.
Anyhow you are making great progress Jas and you could still see a July launch.;)

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for the vote of confidence fellas! Ah, my time line tells me that if everything goes just right (no way that is going to happen) I think I might be able to squeeze in sea trials in July. Maybe. I'd be very happy if I could pull that off, we'll see.

So yesterday I got out the belt sander and knocked down all the high spots. I came back with some epoxy on all the seams and rivets...

From here I'll sand/feather, fill with epoxy, sand/feather, repeat - in hopes of having the seams as flat as possible.

Little progress anyway.:)

Nice. What was the final verdict on the floor coating? Rusto with sand?

Interesting you ask buddy...

I happened to get some foam innards of a PFD stuck into a fresh coat of epoxy. I peeled it away (which was easy) and wouldn't ya know it, there was a really nice texture to it. Since then, I have been on the search for some similar material. The closest I could find is underlayment material for flooring. Not quite enought texture though. Oh well, no biggie. My brain works more than it needs to sometimes.

So yup, sand it is. But, I am pretty sure I'll "salt" it into the final coat of epoxy I lay down rather than the primer coat of Rustoleum. Should hold that sand just great and take the "texture" down just a little.

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok, so I started on the seat boxes this morning. Laminated two 1/2" pieces of Arauco py together...
P1050054.jpg

That photo won't mean much to ya till I get it trimmed up and installed. I was just excited to be moving in that direction.:)

OK, as I was working on that stuff I started to chew on my battery placement again. Totally ridiculous I know. If you are bored, and care, read on...

As I see it I have two options that I am feeling pretty good about.

Option #1
A pair of them mounted right in front of the Merc down low...
P1050038.jpg

Here is what my dog house would kinda look like...
P1050055.jpg

Advantage: The batts are nice and low; centerline to provide ballast; I get an extra seat; closer to the Merc (less cable), more available storage

Disadvantage: Less deck space; doghouse a little more complex build

Option #2
Check it out, housed in the seat box hatch...
P1050053.jpg

I'd have lots of flexibility. I could go with two on one side. Or, one port and one starboard. Or, two on one side and one on the other...
P1050056.jpg

Advantage: Weight forward; more deck space; don't have to build extra stuff; flexibility; easy to access

Disadvantage: Weight to the outside of the boat; farther away from the Merc (more cable); some storage now taken up

I'm kinda 50/50. I am happy to hear your thoughts. Don't blame ya for not wanting to talk about stupid batteries anymore.

Have a good Sat!

I like option 2. What else would you put onder a step? Like you said, more room in the back without something sticking out from the doghouse, more cable to engine, but less to your dash...

Your coming along nicely....

I like the idea of having a seat w/ rod holders in front of the dog house, you have a big crew to keep comfy and that would help out.:)

Would you still have a seat there even if you go with option 2?

You could also have one in each location, that would make the wiring run short to each destination.

Thanks DJ! Yah, I am with ya on that comment there ^^^. I think in the end, deck space may win out.

The extra seat would be a nice bonus - I have an alternate plan for rod holders;)

Nah, if I have the batts at midships I'd definitely want the room on deck.

Hmmmmmmm, I'm thinking space on deck is probably the the most appealing part of the puzzle.

Hey J why don't you just make two small seats on each side of the dog house for each battery to balance the wieght and create small steps and or seats for the youngens. Just a thought something close to the transom and saves deck space!

Huh, small steps you say? I suppose I hadn't really thought of that.

My plan has all along been to have flip up jump seats as I definitely don't want full on seat bases back there. The deck space and access to those back corners (downriggers and such) is super important to me. But a step? Hmmm.

I suppose I could use the "step" as a base for the seat cushion. I'll have to chew on that a little.

Thanks for chipping in fanny!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, not a lot to report, but something...

I have been filling/sanding/feathering the seams and I am just about ready to hit the rest of the deck with epoxy.

I also installed that deck piece pack in...
P1050059.jpg

So bottom line, the batts won't be going in front of the engine.

I was INSTANTLY happy once I stitched that chunk of deck back in. The placement of the batts there would have been a good spot for proximity and balance, but bad for deck space. I am glad I took the time to put it back.

You also notice ductwork poking out of the outdrive hole. You guys who follow close know that I am pumping heat from my wood burner in the basement out to the garage. Well, I added a couple of 90 degree pieces in through the outdrive. I then throw the boat cover on and put the rig on bake for a while. Great for cureing epoxy when the temps are still in winter mode.:)
