Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB refit

Once again I'm reminded of how valuable this site is! I didn't pull the heads off but I will tonight and head gaskets will be added to my order. It is a 90 hp 1990 Evinrude.
Thanks parrisw!!!!

No worries, its a pretty easy job.

Wow that's pretty nasty. Atleast you found the problem and are taking care of it now before the motor blew.

^^^ Got that right.
Pulled the heads and everything looks 22 years old but no big build up. Now I really know what the deflectors are. In my haste I didn't notice the orientation of the water slots on the gaskets. It would seem logical that they favor the location of the thermostat but I'm not sure. I'm waiting for something definative on the J/E forum. This is a pic of the starboard cylinders with the gasket. Does this look right?

Over all it doesnt look too bad. It's cleaned as good as possible. No broken bolts!

Sorry cant help ya much on the gaskets, when you get the new ones it should become evident, it may say on them, can't remember. You changing the deflectors? They look a bit buldged.

Wasn't planning to replace deflectors, the're firmly in place, not torn nor melted. What should I be looking for? By "buldged" do you mean swollen? They don't completely fill the space. Is that bad? Sorry for the rookie questions here but it's my first time with with these.

REPLACE THEM!!!!!! For the few dollars that they are worth. When you get the new ones you'll see what they should look like. They are tight! Grab them with some pliers and pull them out!!!!!!! They actually swell over time and block off water flow to the wrong area's!!!! When you replace them the new ones are slightly long, and you tap them in and trim them after. Yours are definitely swollen and need to be replaced. Once you pull them out you'll see the little tabs that hold them in and where they are not supposed to be!!

I'll be getting 4 diverters with my gaskets today (only $3 each). Thanks again.

Well parrisw I owe you another BIG thanks. You were right about how it will be obvious where the diverters go as there are slots to accept them. As a matter of fact the one on the lower starboard side was installed in the WRONG location!!!!! It was put on the opposite side of the bolt hole AND it completely blocked one of the water slots on the head gasket. This is the side with all the salt build up but not sure if that's related. Searching the J/E site I found the correct way the gaskets should be installed (slots go down and outboard). It looks like these heads were never pulled so it might have been done at the factory, maybe someone had the monday morning blues or friday afternoon frenzy. If your ever in Maine I'll treat you to a lobster dinner and beers!!!

Everything is cleaned out and blown out with air, new diverters are installed and I have all my new gaskets. Now I just have to put it all back together. Started picking up lights and other electrical parts. Picking up a couple batteries later today.

Got the motor up and running, finally. Still had an over heat issue but the problem was a blocked hole in the t-stat manifold causing a vapor lock. Here is a vid of it running without the t-stat just to be sure water was flowing properly through the heads. To me it looks like plenty of flow.

Also installed both batteries. Today it's back to wood working.

Looking really good.

Don't worry too much about heat issues running in the driveway. I still do with mine, for some reason I have no luck running on muffs. Chuck it in the water and see what happens.

Re: 1974 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB refit

I'm happy with the battery placement and there is plenty of storage space left in the battery lockers.
Yep slow but steady progress. I'd love to take a week off to finish it up.
The engine ran fine on muffs and never got warm enough for the stats to open up completely. I'm using clear reinforced tubing at least temporarily, it's nice to be able to see the water flowing through.

Got the anchor locker bulkhead made and started on the splash well sliding doors using ceder to match the bifold doors and dash. The admiral would like to have a small console added to the port bulkhead. okie dokie.
Thunder storms from 3am to 5am washed the boat off. Before leaving for work this morning I jumped in the cuddy looking for signs of leakage but it was bone dry so it looks like that issue is solved (gotta love 5200).

Admiral completed the new cushions and it looks pretty good considering she never did anything like that before. Pics soon on that.

I fixed the link of the vid on my last post. No tach installed yet but the idle sounds high.

Cheers

Here are some pics of the new comfy cushions. A few wrinkles but we can work them out. Got all the pieces of the sliding doors cut last night. Today it's assembly time.
