Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Thanks again, guys! It's great hearing from you. The snow is melting at a good pace and we are looking at 60 degrees for tomorrow...have not seen that temp in a looooong time. Think I'll start off by power washing the boat and trailer to get everything cleaned up from last Fall and Winter. Then it's on to making up the new transom for Miss Joyride. Leaning toward not using marine grade plywood for the transom, new decking or interior because of the chemical reaction between it and the aluminum hull; I only want to do this one time. Hey, what do you folks think about repainting with the vintage Starcraft green? I'd use it on the outer hull from the waterline to the rails and for some interior trim, along with a light tan, sand or off white for most everything else. Or, perhaps a Ford Ranger red with a grey.....? Or, maybe......

Joe

Marine plywood is NOT pressure treated, so it won't react w/ aluminum. It is expensive though, so using the aurauco that many find at Menards up your way is a good alternative.

Hi, jb! You 'ole hillbilly!! Just might be getting down your way, to Clarksburg, this Spring. You bring up something that has perplexed me: when I have asked about using marine ply on my aluminum boat the lumber yard folks have told me not to use it on an aluminum hull because of a reaction problem. The old Starcraft plywood that I removed was certainly not marine grade. I'll need to really dig into this as marine grade ply was my first choice...then it wasn't...then it was...then it wasn't...then it was...then it definately was not. Then, it was...again...then it wasn't. Now....I think there is a pattern here...probably...

Come on down, holler when your plans get made. Old, perhaps, 2 short of a half century end of May. Hillbilly, not so much, just don't ask the Admiral when you're here or take too long a look at my porch

There are pretty stringent guidelines for plywood to be marine graded & STAMPED:
https://www.apawood.org/level_b.cfm?content=srv_help_prd_marine

You CAN get pressure treated marine grade, but it will be even more expensive then marine grade. You can also get pressure treated plywood that WON'T react w/ aluminum. It is difficult to find & buy retail, but more then 1 boat maker uses it to build their boats.

Eventually, marine grade, pressure treated and probably PT marine grade plywood will succumb to the elements, if not sealed & maintained. SC may have used generic plywood for their decks or unsealed marine grade, and that too may have changed over the years.

At this point when you tore into it, the plywood was nearly 40yrs old. I'm pretty sure that's well past SC's intended service life. Plus who's to say how it was maintained & stored for the 1st 35+yrs. It doesn't take long for a neglected boat's deck to go from Good To Go to trashed........

There are quite a few alternatives available in most markets. Spend some time, dig thru some threads, figure out what is available local to you and what it runs per sheet for 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 & 3/4" 4X8 sheets. Then pick what works best for you, your budget & your project. I LOVE single sided MDO as Auraco is difficult to find here. The 1 time I did see it, it was only available in 3/4" sheets.

Come on down, always up for a meet & greet :watermelon: BTW Duke33's not that far south of Clarksburg either. And Dog Run Lake is just west of Clarksburg, electric only though.

Dont over think the plywood thing. NON pressure treated acx or arauco sealed three times with epoxy resin will outlast yourself and your children

Thanks, jb and SigSaur, for the link and information. Looks like ply and resin will do the trick. Probably.....

As an update: no real headway on the Starcraft SS restoration yet this year as we are having an awful time with the worst mosquito infestation in decades in our area. The huge amount of snow last Winter, along with a very wet Spring and cooler than normal temperatures created the opportunity for a huge problem effecting anyone going outside or trying to work in the garage. I have never seen so many aggressive mosquitos!! Will let you know when I get back to the restoration. Hope everyone is well and having fun with your boats.

Safe boating,

Joe

Get a few fans blowing in the work area. Skeeters don't like the breeze.

Hi guys! It's not effecting just boating this year; here it is the second week in June and I have only been out to fly an RC model airplane ONE time this year...last Thursday evening. Had to take a shower as soon as I returned home to get all the mosquito spray off me. We have had the patio furniture outside for nearly a month and I have yet to sit on any of it. Not fun!

Mosquitoes are bad here too, I've been spraying my property once a week to control them. Deet is my friend in the back yard and on the water. Another tactic is I always take the admiral with me, they will eat her alive and leave me alone,

That is so sad. But a heck of an idea. :thumb: I haven't had too much trouble with skeeters, but the gnats on the lake buzzing around my head is almost unbearable. At least they don't bite.

Hi friends! I worked on the boat yesterday...well, sort of...:playful:...I moved the transom pattern about 2 feet to the right so I could get a rake out of the garage...:biggrin-new:

The Admiral called my attention to something I'd not witnessed before while in the garage; she had just driven into the garage and parked the car. As soon as she shut the engine off a HUGE swarm of mosquitos gathered in and around the dual exhaust outlets...and stayed there! As near as I can fathom the pests must have been after the Carbon Dioxide in the exhaust fumes...

Yeap that CO2 is what draws skeeters in to the victim. My truck poisons them with the sweet fresh smell of premium with no cats to sour the fumes. :painkiller:

The post counter is also FUBAR.

A dead skeeter is a good skeeter! Unless you're a skeeter.

Post count is only temporarily discombobulated. It's on the fix list, but lower priority compared to some other bugs. And remember a dead bug is a good bug. :D

After taking a few sword lessons from my friend, Sparrow, I feel better equipped to fight off the enemy skeeters! The boat is sitting patiently, albeit one tire is totally flat and the other is waaaay low on air, down by the woodpile. Will hook onto the trailer and haul the boat up to the work area by the garage and get back into the restoration procedure. Need to go to the box stores and get a pressure washer and the lumber yard for a couple of sheets of plywood and also need to purchase two new tires with wheels...darn, probably new wheel bearings, grease, and lug nuts, too...and a lifting jack. Then I'll clean the boat and trailer and start work on the transom replacement. At least that is the plan at present....
