Hi Joe, I used some orange citrus smelling waterless hand cleaner that mechanics use. Come to think; it was "Go-Joe" with pumice. I call it "agent orange". It's not spray on, but pretty easy to use and effective. I smeared a good quantity around with a long handled dishwash brush and let it sit awhile for the chemistry to cut the grease. Then I used a green Scotch scour pad and a little elbow grease. The scour pad and the pumice cleaned things up pretty good. After that, I didn't even need the power wash, just a rinse with a hose. - Grandad

Thank you, Grandad. I'll check that out...let's see now, the Goof-Off smells like lemons and the Go-Joe smells like orange citrus and when I'm finished with cleanup I'll probably smell like...wait a minute...let me think this over...

Safe boating,

Joe

Edit: Went to your restoration thread and started reading...lots of great ideas in there! What a nice boat you have.

Grandad, how long do you leave the Go-Joe on the aluminum inner hull before you start the clean-up? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Joe, For the most, I think only 10-15 minutes was adequate before brushing and rinsing. At stubborn spots, I reapplied fresh goo and let it sit for a 1/2 hour while I worked on other stuff. - Grandad

Thanks, Grandad. I'll pick some of the product up and give it a try...after the rains stop. We have had days of thunderstorms and lots of water. Supposed to clear up Tuesday.

Today I removed the old glue residue from the port side inner hull and wiped it down with Acetone. After that, I took all the controls and wiring (removed earlier) out of the boat and placed the items in the garage. Tomorrow I will work on the bow area glue locations if all goes well.

Safe boating,

Joe

Looking clean, Joe. Have you found a good method for glue removal?

Hi, GA. I just followed dozer's advise as described in above posts. Wear old clothes and use plenty of paper towels and plastic scrapers. It helps to bring some patience along, too, as each side took me about 3 1/2 to 4 hours. I am glad that part of the restoration is over.

Looking real good Joe, and yes patience is a virtue for that job.

Thanks, dozer and GA, for the nice comments. I'm having a good time, all in all, and it will be hard to cover up the boat for winter.

Hi gang,

I decided today not to store the boat indoors as the ability to work on it was declined by the storage owner. There is nothing in the boat at this time so, as a result of Winter soon arriving on the horizon, here is the plan. If the weather allows, I'll finish the glue removal and clean the inside of the hull a section at a time and hopefully the task will be finished before snow falls. In any event, the boat will be covered and stored at my place until I can get back on it next Spring. Some ungoing cleanup of misc. parts can be done in the garage and in my basement as time allows. If anything major occurs in the meantime I'll post. Thanks to all my friends for your support and help so far and, if we don't get together beforhand, have a great holiday season. Talk to you all later.

Hello, gang. Just a bit of an update for the record. It has rained, drizzeled, rained and rained some more for the last TEN days in a row. Nothing new done on the boat except bailing some water out of the inside 'cause I put a hole or two in the tarp...right where the water always collects when the tarp sags. Tonight it is.........snowing.........and the weatherman is calling for a snow/rain mix for the next six days and nights. We now return you to your regularly scheduled viewing.

Kinda strange weather going on down there. Only had a couple flakes of the white stuff so far up here, and it is forecasted to be real nice for the next week.

Hi, dozer! It does sound like a good time to come up for a fish fry and a Canadian beer, eh? Just an hour ago, while driving home from having the car "winterized", I observed the most beautiful and largest rainbow I've ever seen in the sky. It was worth the trip to see the sight. Take care in your neck of the woods, my friend, and enjoy the nice weather next week.

PJ --- normally that kind of weather at this time of year is reserved for us Canuks..... :) Glad you're getting it not us --- yet anyways!!! :)

Hopefully, you can pluck away at it a bit more before winter really sets in... you've made some great progress so far for sure!

Take care,

Jim

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Hi, Jim, this morning there was some crunchy white stuff on the boat tarp. I was looking out the window at the boat and thinking I really miss working on it. Who would have thought? The Admiral is probably thinking I should buck up, put on my long undies and get myself back in the boat..."snow?", she quips,...."what snow?"

Thanks, my friend, for the kind words regarding the progress this year.

I'm thinking you may want to add a sweater, some socks and a tuque (Canuk version of a winter hat!)... the neighbors might think that you've gone a little loco if you are out working on the boat in just your long undies! :)

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Speaking of boats, this morning I found myself at a trailer parts business as a result of talking to a guy yesterday while getting my car ready for Winter (whew!). He had repaired a few boat trailers and mentioned that he'd purchased new running gear ready to bolt or weld to the frame for less money than buying the parts and doing all the assembly work. I was really surprised that it is possible to do this on my boat trailer. So, after talking with the friendly guy at the store here is what I'm considering. My trailer has 4 bolt rims and uses 12" tires for starters. My ordered axle will be sized for up to 3500 lbs., have new spindles, upgraded grease fittings with seal caps, new bearings, new springs, will accept 5 stud rims for new 14" tires and be factory painted when it arrives. About $240 for the axle plus the cost for springs and rims/tires. This saves much work and will allow me to haul the boat wherever I'd like without worry about small tires or the axle failing. In addition, the trailer rollers, lights, swing front extension, wiring and just about everything else I need is there for shopping convenience. Now, if I can get the Admiral to take the hull off the trailer for me it will so much easier to get the required measurements...

Safe boating,

Joe
