GA, actually the Admiral WAS smiling when I was picking up the boat stuff...kind of a funny smile at that as I remember...

Safe boating,

Joe

Was it a kind of Breaking Bad smile? :faint2:

I must be lucky, my rub rails never did shrink and are always nice and loose in the channels.

Looking good Joe, spray that goof on real heavy then let it sit, ten minutes at least.

Thanks dozer, ten minutes it will be. It will be good to get the glue residue out of the boat..then I can powerwash the hull. That will be a milestone for me.

progress looks good! i'm still having a hard time feeling sorry for you about the Admiral's constant pushing you to work on the boat.

Thanks, ba. The Admiral left today on a week long business trip so it's just me and my pal, Ellie (my dog) until Friday evening. We spent the day in the workshop working on RC airplanes...well, I mostly worked on them and Ellie watched, er, slept. Ellie said she wouldn't tell the Admiral if I let her sit in my big chair..with a blanket on it..for most of the day while she supervised...er, slept. Works for me!

The Vice-Admiral, Ellie, informed me that she wanted her picture in the restoration thread since she had donated so much of her sleep...er, time to keeping me at work on the boat...and models...

Safe boating,

Joe

Well, Brenn, I'm not so sure that will work. The Admiral already called me tonight and ASKED what I done all day...of course I lied....:D

BF..?! Her OWN account?? :faint2: I thought you were my friend...she already holds me accountable for finishing up my chores and various projects on account I'm mostly unaccountable most of the time...ah, wait a minute...I need to rethink how to say that better...

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Today I checked the lower rub rails and after removing the two bolts I used to keep the correct length I found the rubber insert to be easy to move in the aluminum channel and in nice shape, at least on the starboard side..which is the one I checked. I checked the port side and the rubber insert was loose. It looks as though I can remove the unit intact, clean it up and store it in it's bolted length. This I will do when I finish cleaning the glue from the inner hull...because....the inside channel with all the glue residue will fall off when the rub rail is removed. So, I may as well clean that inside channel now.

Taking a deep breath, I climbed into the boat and, with Goof-Off and Acetone and lots of paper towels and rags, the glue removal task was started...again. This time I cleaned the starboard inner hull side forward to the helm support. 4 hours of contortion practise and knee flats. After cleaning an area from top to bottom, the freshly scraped area was wiped down with Acetone to clean off any residue. Worked just like dozer said it would. Now, if it doesn't rain tonight or tomorrow morning I'll get to cleaning the port side inner hull...probably.

Safe boating,

Joe

we like the pix of results. but be sure to shoot some of the misery to show the Admiral!

another bottom feeder idea: i go through LOTS of paper towels in my various projects. i also pee at work. when i wash my hands afterwards, i wad up the towel & stuff in pocket for later re-use. wife and i call those "pre-enjoyed" paper towels and rarely buy rolls.

Looking sharp Joe... nice progress. I found that using a scrap piece of plywood and scrap piece of 1 or 2" solid insulation made my knees hurt a whole lot less... I think I recall them thanking me!

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Thanks, guys! Funny thing today while removing the glue...leaves were falling onto the yard and into the boat. I'm afraid there won't be many more days of good outdoor weather for boat work so it's a toss-up as to whether the new wood will go in this year. We have had snow in the air by October 16th for three out of the last four years.

ba, we buy paper towels by the 24 roll count package! No way would I want to bring those home one at a time in my wet pocket LOL.

BF, it is rather nice with the sunshine reflecting off the aluminum, eh? I'll need to wear sunglasses when both sides are finished.

InMotion, I have one of those foam pads and have knee pads, too...they work pretty good when I remember to use them...

Safe boating,

Joe

Looking good Joe, the nice clean aluminum is Purdy. It's still a lot of work to get the glue off. Winter is going to be early here as well.

Brenn, I'm not sure either but if I was a cartoonist we would have some fun with it...

Thanks, dozer. The whole restoration process is a lot of work although I can truely say it is mostly enjoyable "work".

Re: 1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

No boatwork yesterday...yardwork instead...

Question: Suggestions needed for a real good spray on cleaner for the hull, especially the inner hull, for use prior to the powerwash. I'd like to spray it on, let it sit for awhile (or while I drive to the carwash) so it can be working, and powerwash it and the grime off the aluminum and out of the boat. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Safe boating,

Joe
