the boat hibernates and gently weeps as the canadians handed it to both the men and women from the usa, then granlund and selanne give it to us again for bronze. congrads to canada, and ex jet selanne and wild's granlund. usa has been humbled again.IMG_0175.jpgIMG_0174.jpg

Wow CC that snow is crazy, it will be June before that all melts so you can get to the boat. I'm not going to complain about the little bit we have after seeing those pics.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

ya plenty of snow here! gonna be around awhile also as they are talking 25 below for a week coming. i did get a coat of rustoleum rusty metal primer on using the hvlp sprayer from HF. went pretty well, took awhile to figure it out and used more paint than should have probably by the time i got it right. used a full quart for all of trailer, but pretty hapy with coverage and looks real smooth. my procedure, was as follows. i air hosed it down, then sprayed it down with acetone using hvlp gun. dries very fast, so took a 1/2 hr to mix 16 ounces paint to 4 ounces acetone to thin it. ( this seemed like about right and sprayed well) stirring slowely whole time. sprayed all i could on trailer and then smaller parts, axel, and fenders. waited a day and had wife and daughter help flip trailer and then did the other 1/2 or so. real happy with how it turned out, and lessons learned with gun. it was real easy to use and adjust as needed i felt. a couple things i would do different is wear a light mask, as nose hairs filled up, annd practice a bit more so i did not waste so much paint in learning process. will post some pics tomorrow of it with primer on it.
now question time, looking for some advice. remember it is a trailer, so my thoughts are air hose off, spray acetone cleaner, spray 1st coat of topcoat.
question 1 - is 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats topcoat sufficent?
question 2 - should i use hardener in both topcoat applications or just last one?
question 3 - really dont feel the need to sand or smooth out between primer and top coat or each top coat , its a trailer and really pretty smooth now after primer , thoughts or suggestions?
question 4 - how long between coats to cure? i waited 16 hrs to flip it and did not scratch or lose any primer, dried very fast, and some theories are to cover next coat before fully cured. ( have heard it helps one coat adhere to other ) or wait longer before each coat. thinking a coat a day would be my preference, using the rusto professional, keep in mind i gotta flip it for full coverage, so a total of 1 coat primer and 2 coats topcoat is actually 6 sprays for me.
thanks in advance, and any thoughts or advice is appreciatted.

1 primer and 2 top coats of paint should do it, that's normally all I ever do. I don't know about the primer you used, it should say on the can if it has to be sanded for the paint to adhere properly. Yes use the hardener for both top coats of paint. Dried to the touch and fully cured are 2 different things, it should be a least a day. I always give mine 2 depending on the temps too.

Oh yeah and for gawds sake get a respirator!

Yup, spot on on Paint. I'd give 4 hours between Top Coats w/Hardener, then a full 24 hours before banging around on it. What Temps will you be painting in??

in the shop so heating up to 70 before paint, then turn down while painting to keep debris down, then waiting about 4 hrs to turn back up to 70 so between 60 and 70 i would guess.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

well i used wogs procedure, and i must say it turned out real well i think, 1 coat primer and 2 of top coat with acetone thinner and hardener in the top coats. real happy with my experience with the hf hvlp sprayer. pics dont do it justice ,as i had to brighten them up as so dark in paint area. it really does look much better in person, and nary a run. letting it cure thru weekend ,then on to wheel bearings and lights, and maybe even a little bling ( pinstripe ) i will post better pics than these when i get that far. till then , here is something to look at.
