thanks all for the kind words, and a special thanks to wog for his input and recipe, and also doz , as i set the trailer up the same as he had. gonna have to adjust bunks when i get boat on er, otherwise should be complete. gonna be awhile as the boat is still in hibernation. gotta be somethin i could be doing. maybe tear down windshield for black paint like doz. my color sceme looks to be white boat with black trim and a little red accent, so thinking black windshield would be a great way to go.IMG_0174.jpg

White boat with Black trim and some Red accent sounds like a great color scheme.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

IMG_0217.jpg so i found some time and thought i should leak test the fuel tank. i bought it on flea bay and the guy said it tested out fine, but feel like i need to check it myself. i basically plugged the fill and vent lines, with some stuff sitting around garage and double clamped all at both ends. then i put a t in the threaded fitting with an acetalene guage ( reads small psi ) and a valve with air fitting. this way i can crack the valve and slowly get 3 psi in tank ( this is the number i have been hearing from other threads here ) also with the valve i am only checking for leaks on tank side , not my compressor or hose.

Re: 1973 starcraft ss restore in progress

IMG_0219.jpg so i put a slow psi to the tank, and found a leak right away. the gasket on sending unit was leaking and after taking apart it is real dry and brittle. i was able to shine a light in the tank and looks real nice and clean. i will also do an omn test on sender, but looks and works fine. my question for you all is can i clean up the sending unit and tank where gasket goes real good and use a product like permatex gasket , instead of cork ( like was in there) the permatex would be more convinient and i think more plyable over time, and not dry out. any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. am i doing this correct / is it safe to pump 3 psi into tank slowly / will permatex be a good way to go on gasket. my thoughts are test sender and if good put back together , try another leak test and hop she holds 3 psi for 24 hours, or spray with soapy water to search for other leaks. thanks

I would make a new gasket from some gasket material from the local auto parts store, and still use the permatex.

I would be sure to use something that is not devoured by gas. That's why they use cork. If there is a special gasket maker that will hold up to constant contact with fuel I've not seen it yet.

so tro my way of thinking then, go with straight cork and no gasket sealer or permatex as they do not hold up to gas. sound right to you fellas, or do i use both?

Just make sure that whatever You use is compatible with gas.
I just recently fount this thread, Good job so far.
Cant wait to see the finished job.
My Wife and I have Her Grandpa's 18' StarCraft s/s.
Same shape as Yours started out. Soft floors, bad floatation and questionable transom.
If I get My knees fixed this spring, We hope to start this summer.
Good Luck with Your project.

If the permatex gasket goop is gas rated, I would put a thin film on both sides of the gasket and slap her together.

When I rebuilt my tanks I used this from AutoZone. It's a rubberized fiberous gasket material that's impervious to gas. I used a very thin film of Permagasket to stick em on. Worked Great!!!

k, thanks guys. got some cork gasket material from store and a tube of permatex . both stated resistance to gasoline, so gonna make a gasket and go with a layer of permatex on both sides as suggested. did an ohm test on sender, it is goes from 245 ohms in empty position to 36 in full position. so thinking it works fine as that is what i learned googling it . only thing that has me wondering about it , is that it jumps around on meter while moving float arm instead of a smooth transition in ohm reading. am quessing it is ok, less anybody can shed more light on subject. thanks even hard to work with gasket and permatex here, as dipped below zero and highs of 10 above and lows of 5 below for the next few days. getting old now!

thanks bf.. well sitting around watching bb and hockey did not last long. ended up taking tank to shop, at work and putting sending unit back in with new gasket and permatex after warming it all up. then drove out to shed i had donor stored in, and pulled the donor out of hibernation. hope to test tank again sunday after permatex sets up , and get the donor stripped of anything usable in next few days
