Re: 1973 starcraft starchief V

Ok just a few pics of a repair that was made to the forward hatch. When i got the boat the forward hatch had been caved in and the hinges broken. So the hatch cover was reinforced with a some marine plywood, some 3/4" red oak, a piano hinge, some T nuts and of course some epoxy. Not done with the hatch i plan on adding some sort of inside latch, just havent picked it out yet or ironed out all the details of attaching it yet.

Great progress brighp2. I really like the extra wide door. My door is stock and seams to be in the way sometimes. I have thought about removing it, but the ability to lock it up has stopped me. Nice truck too. I have a soft spot for 50?s iron. Anyway I thought you might get kick out of my old 52 gmc. I took a 75 chev ? ton 4X4 and grafted the 52 body on it. Sure was a fun truck. Used mostly for kicking around in the bush. Nothing fancy but I didn?t mind scratching or denting it up.
Thanks for the ford truck pics guys.

Nothing new tonight but if all goes well there should be some new pics up by the end of the weekend. Going to try to get the engine box or the instrument pannel roughed out, hell if things go really well both. Anyways stay tune planning on making a big push to have the interior done by around the start of may, so i can go fishing. Thanks for all the great remarks.

Did you coat the Red Oak really well with epoxy. It is prone to rot. White oak is the preferred Oak for boat building. But if you coated it with epoxy it should last a long time.

Some dude is making end caps on ebay. Search for starcraft and look in boat parts and you'll find them there.

Welcome aboard!
Am I seeing your engine right? Does it happen to say OMC on it?

Well...
OMC has been out of business for a long time and parts are scarce as well as tech's to repair them.
It is not the absolute end of the world, but the same boat with a same year Mercruiser motor and outdrive has readily available parts, and tech support.

Hello brighp2 - I just found your thread and its getting me wicked pumped. I have the same boat but its the OB model and 1975. Also mine has an original sticker on the dash that says 18 Chieftain. Are you sure yours is a Starchief?

I absolutely love what your doing to that bad girl. Very nice work!!! I'll be starting my resto thread soon. This weekend I made my way out the back yard in 18" of frozen snow to try out my new end caps:D (PM me on those if you still need a pair.) I ended up climbing in under the tarp and just sat there for a while plotting my first moves. The Admiral got worried because I was missing for so long. I may be able to get started sometime in May. All my work will be done outside so my pace will be much slower than yours.

I plan to add a belly tank as you've done. Can you get me the specs on yours? Also whats the white board stuff your using? I'll have more questions for sure.

BTW...The latest pics you posted are too small to see much detail.

Re: 1973 18' starcraft starchief V

well I am basing that it is a starchief because of the tag on the side.

The belly tank I got from www.oceanlinkinc.com, part# FOLT3004M. The site has a diagram with all the dimensons of the tank and if that tank wont work for you then there are a ton of tanks of all sizes and shapes.

The white boards are 3/4" marine plywood that has been painted Mist Gray with pettit easypoxy paint.

Well this weekend I didnt get as much done as I would have liked. But, I did get the engine box cut out and glued together. The engine box is notched to slide under whatever the board forward of the transom is called. Then the seat in front of the engine box is going to be hinged in the front and will create a sort of wedge to keep the box from sliding fore and aft. The aluminum angle that you can see in previous pics that i have posted is there to keep the box from moving side to side.

That looks like positive ID to me.
I'm thinking of painting the bottom of my hull and top sides/interior the same color then gloss black on side of hull.
Great progress. This is obviously not your first wood working project.
Thanks for the info. That tank may be a budget buster for me. I may fab one out of aluminum.

Nope not the first wood working project. I'll try to put a few pics of the last project up in the next couple of days.

Ok back to this project. Today got a few supports for the engine box in place.

Could use a little help locating a part. I am looking for a trim limit switch for my stern drive #2584058. Looked around a bit and haven't been able to find one. this is the switch that is at the top of I believe its called a gimbal ring.

Re: 1973 18' starcraft starchief V

Well this weekend got the back panels ruffed out. Added two door in the panels with lift off hinges and latches that i havent installed yet. The door on the starboard side will most be used to access the trim pump motor. The Port side will most be used to for storage. The gray stuff you see in the pics is used wood filler to fill nail holes and chips. If your wondering about the hand in the one pic its just one of my buddies being a smartass.
