I picked up a 72 SS today. It's been sitting in a boat salvage yard for the last 20 years or so and was last registered in 1988! I didn't feel to bad today going to the dump to drop off the donor glasser boat. My wife sure doesn't understand my madness and thinks I'm a little crazy... well... maybe I am! I'm just excited to save this old boat and make it into a great fishing boat for my family.

Here's a pick of the donor boat right before going to the dump:

It was totally rotten and can't believe we made it safely off the lake last Sunday in one piece.

After getting that old glasser off my trailer it was off to the boat salvage yard to pick up the SS

Had some grass growing out of the floor. LOL

I'm pretty stoked with the shape this hull is in. It appears that it's had the floor replaced once and the rotted transom is original. There are very few dents or scratches and should paint up pretty nicely. Here's some more pics: Would you guys rather have the photobucket links or should I download the pics straight to iboats?

Has a 3/16" al plate mounted on the outside of transom. I don't think this was stock and was added by previous owner trying to save the transom. I'm mounting a pretty big engine and believe I'll reuse this:

cj, donations and recycling, you're an environmentalist.

Nice find, hopefully at true bottomfeeder prices. Clean and shiny, nice.

What are your plans?

Since your pics are already the ideal size, use the IMG code links photobucket provides to post them right in your posts. I edited your previous posts.

Hull looks great. Perhaps I wasn't paying attention at some point, but what did the the donor boat "donate"? A motor?

Re: 1972 '18 SS Rebuild

I picked it up for $125 and spent $50 throwing away the glass hull. lol

My plans are to make it into a center console with a bench seat / platform in the back. A little platform up front with storage and live well. I plan on using it mainly for fishing.

I really appreciate all those who have gone before me. This site is loaded with great ideas and advice. Please let me know if you see me doing anything wrong or if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

A friendly welcome from one cadet to another, congrats on your find. And good luck on the rebuild. The hull looks in decent shape and it is a great place to start from!!!

It is great to see so many of the SC boats saved from the crusher and re-born again.

Thanks Ez!

Hull looks great. Perhaps I wasn't paying attention at some point, but what did the the donor boat "donate"? A motor?

The donor boat gave me a really nice trailer, steering, gauges, an 18 gallon poly tank, new battery, and a Johnson140 with tnt. I totally overpaid for the donor boat for $1000, but the PO produced paper work from a powerhead rebuild.

Re: 1972 '18 SS Rebuild

I made some progress yesterday by getting the transom apart. What a mess that was! The PO had done some interesting things back there and I'm not sure what he was thinking. Here's a couple of pics.

Notice the big aluminium plate on the outside of transom. I've not measured the thickness, but I'm guessing it's around 5/16". Probably weighs around 35 pounds

Notice the 5/16" thick T mold under the splash

After getting the transom apart, my son and I took her off the trailer and turtled it. I did a fairly quick 220 sand, wipe down, prime, and paint. I used the Rustoleum aluminium grey primer with a grey Rustoleum implement paint top coat. The plan is to put it back on the trailer today and start making the new transom.

Hey CJ,

Welcome man!

That is one thick transom skin! Holy smokes! Ya, I don't think there would have been much flex in that transom...

All the best on your journey!!!

Re: 1972 '18 SS Rebuild

Didn't get as much done as I planned... isn't that how it normally goes? My son and I got the boat back on the trailer and then noticed the 5hp motor on the compressor crapped out. I spent most of the day trying to source out a new motor and picking up the boat flooring/transom material. I did get the new transom cut out and the first coat of spar.

I have a few questions about the alum transom skin. I'm hoping someone will speak up with some suggestions.

The PO installed bolts through the entire transom where the splash well mats up to the transom. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the splash well screw into to transom from the inside of the boat with wood screws? If that is the case, I would like to JB weld all of those holes up in the alum transom and the alum plate. I think the 6 bolts on the motor, the 6 bolts on the skeg brace, and the 4 corner bolts on each side should be enough to hold on the alum plate. (Not sure if that is really called the skeg brace... its that triangular piece of alum on the floor next to the drain plug).

I sure hope I'm clear enough with my question. My main motivation is to eliminate as many water entry points to the new transom as I can.

Hey CJ... ya those transom "screws" are usually just 1/2" or "3/4" screws that attach the spashwell to the inside of the transom. PO did some interesting things. I would think your idea of patching those holes is a good idea. Once the JB has cured, you might want to also slather some 5200 on the inside for good measure just in case one of the JB welds pops out!

You could slather some PL Premium on the transom skin as well before bolting it using the 6 transom brace bolts and 4 x 2 sides bolts --- Just for added measure. Seal the edges of the skin with 5200. That'll make it water tight for a long, long time.

Incidentally... I like your Jeep --- looks like an old (but in good shape at least from the front) CJ.

I love CJs. Would love to have one. I believe a CJ8 is a Scrambler correct? Very cool. A buddy of mine completely redid a 7 in high school.

Re: 1972 '18 SS Rebuild

Thanks for the quick response guys. That sounds like a great idea IM. I saw some PL at West Marine when I picked up my Gluvit and almost picked some up.

Yeah EZ, it's a cj8 scrambler. I've had it since '92 and have about 500,000 miles on her. I just did another frame off resto on it and put 1 ton running gear with lockers and a 400 hp 401 V8. Lots of good memories with that old beast. The SS should be light enough for her to pull it.

Nice project CJ. I like the Scrambler too. I had a '67 CJ5 back in the early 80's, it was a lot of fun. Now I have an '01 XJ. With 400 HP, you can probably tow 20 SS's!

bad arse cj...always have loved em as well as IH Scouts
That triangular thing you call a skeg is simply a knee brace.
you are making great progress..
btw
that cj will tow that boat like a dream
