Hello Iboat community :)

I am preparing to restore my first and only boat i bought 4 years ago. Its served me well and i think it should look as good to everyone else as it does to me. I have been educating myself on the basics of fiberglass work and gelcoats. But still a little unsure on certain things so advice and criticism welcomed with open arms.

So here is my project

Starting on the exterior

My first question is my weather cracks on the top of my boats gelcoat. Some people say to cut them wider before filling them. This might take a long time since they are everywhere on this boats top half.

My other repairs are to the hulls.... center rib? im still not with boat terms but the Pic#3 is what im talking about and then also a few pinholes and a scuff, they dont look deep but i guess i wont know till untill i start clawing at it (Pic #3-4)

Welcome to the dry dock. That looks like a nice project, should be a lot of fun.

Sorry I can't answer any of your questions, just a DIYer myself...

Repairing a front crosss member that had chip turned into me finding water had soaked all through the joint horizontally and its all because they drilled drain hole right threw the fiberglassed woods sides  im going to redo this piece properly with drain holes cut into a new cross member, glassing, then into my boat. Plus bigger diameter drain holes would give me a lot of help when giving it a wash.

When i was taking out my seats i noticed the screws were coming out wet and corroded to a needle. i then stepped on the area and sure enough water squirted out..... Looks like i might be doing the deck here also :( this job just got a lot bigger and work is starting to pick up. Want to get this done before winter since im working outside.

You may find the water went pretty deep. On my boat all the wood was touch other wood, the water just seeped through the whole system. I ended up replacing all the wood, er well still in the midst of doing that.

You may want to hold off pulling the cap, until you find out if you need to or not. I have heard you need to make sure you have everything measured right so you can get it back together too.

Welcome to iboats klassen!

Ya I'd do some exploritory drilling to assess your rot before I decapped her.

alright that sounds like a good idea, i am pretty confident in a deck replacement for the back section at least because i can put a pick screwdriver in the hole and pull up the glass off the deck like its carpet, plus it has a little bit of give when i walk over a few spots. Do i just cut into it with a 2in drill bit and take a peak inside at a few different locations?

Just reread and caught that its the full deck. Decapping isn't that big of a deal but why do the extra work if you don't need too is where I'm coming from. However if your deck is wet enough to squish water out it probably means stringers and a transom are at least the same. Unless eyeballing shows obvious signs from the inside of the transom I'd still do some sampling.

For sampling you don't need to go nearly that big. Take a 1/4" drill bit, wrap a piece of tape around it just short of your transom thickness (usually roughly 1" for the normal 1 1/2" trans but check to be sure). Drill some holes as low as you can in the trans from the inside, the tape will show when to stop drilling so you don't drill all the way through. If the shavings come out dry and light might still be able to do deck w/o decap, dark and wet trans is rotted and might as well decap.

For checking the stringers, since you are planning on doing the deck anyway, go ahead and cut some small 1'x1' inspection holes and you'll be able to see what you have.

All that said - once again decapping isn't that big of a deal but you will want to map out the boat and take/record measurements so you can check that you're not deforming it as you rebuild.

klassenkid welcome to iboats. one piece of advice so far. Its best to get a free account on photobucket and upload your pictures there. That way there is a better way to post pictures that makes it much more convenient and cozy for us readers :)

Rehabbing a fiberglass boat can get expensive in a hurry and is very time consuming.

Just be sure your eyes are wide open before tearing into her.

thank you for the very helpful transom testing method i will try it out tomorrow after work. Im going to also measure my boats dimensions and get a 3D picture. Have to start at 2 in the morning, the truckers life i tell ya.

thank you sir for that, i was wondering how people were doing it. I just got an account now

this is a picture of the terrrible supports on the bow cap, you can also notice all the tiny bolts and nuts for my cap which as long as i put some grease on, should come off no problem for a easy removal.

Yeah i was started this project thinking it was just a paint job but now im redoing the the interior since theres no point in covering **** with a gold plate. I have been reading oops extension project to get the idea of what to do and how much work this is going to be, 1500 in supplies im guessing and since my first this will not be a smooth ride. I Just want to do this right and this forum seems to make DYIers into professionals with the help of great people

so i drilled a couple holes in my trans and they all came out wet and dark.... Its been raining this past few days and sounds like it wont give up till the weekend so im thinking about buying one of those cheap 300 dollar car weather shelters you can buy at canadian tire.
