good idea on the shelter! i bought one for that same reason, i live in western washington!!

it seems i got the use of my work shop so i for now the shelter being built will be held off. I live in Alberta and the rain just wont stop.

For anyone following this i finally started on this project again. We had a terrible family tragedy with cousin passing away in a fire, so there has been a time of not wanting to do anything other than spend quality time with the family. RIP Martin.

Anyway on a brighter note i went to a Grad ceremony in Kelowna, BC and while i was down there I also picked up my supplies. Hitting two birds with one stone. Since we dont have a store in Grande Prairie that provides what i need.

I wanted to get some 1708 but they didnt have any in stock. This is 5 Yards of woven roving18oz and 7 yards of matt 1.5oz
4.jpg

Got a peak at the top of my transom and it was rotten

Now the cap is off and ready to start grinding once i can pull the boat out on a dry day ( dont want the whole shop to get itchy)
No turning back now!
Have to make my cousin Proud :)

That is very kind and thank you, he was a follower of God which gives us peace that he's in a better place. I think i will be naming the boat after him, he really was a great man.
But moving on though, for the resin, thats all they had in bulk and the guy was saying it bonds really well to old fiberglass for a cheap alternative to epoxy. Which im hoping so is true since epoxy is sO expensive! wow did my chin drop.

Anyway here is my work of yesterday.. what do you notice?
photo1-1.jpg

Yup, No stringers!! Just a bunch of soaked foam with 2 pieces of wood molded into it at center and 1 in the front.
Like a sponge that just got pulled out of a pail of water

150lbs later

My question now is should i redo this with actual stringers or just go with the same way they have done it. Their way is a lot easier but i dont really know if its a big no no?

My next target at the moment is bracing the stern and cutting the inner fiberglass at the transom to pull it out. If anyone has tips on this procedure its more than welcome. I dont think it will be too difficult as the fiberglass seems loose on the wood.

Cheers!

Why you are at it take off the storage on the gunwales. I did mine after the floor and it was a hot mess. The wood in those are probably rotten too.

Well i think the foam part means that this boat the foam was structural... im not an expert but for the extra support i would put in a stringers system. but best to let the knowledgeble ones pipe in..

man too bad i didnt pipe in before. There is a company called composites one. they have a location in fort worth, 30 minutes from you they have some really good pricing on resin. lowest i have heard of.. i think last time i checked i was quoted 153 dollars for a 100lb roll (80-90 yards), and the resin was 5gal for 105 bucks.. maybe for your next project look them up. (plus no shipping or hazmat charges :D you can pick it up)
oh and by far the best price on Acetone! 55 bucks for a 5gal bucket lol!

your making great progress! hope to see this boat back on the water shortly

I was actually planning on it, I'm doing a complete makeover, I want this thing to look new. For now it's where I put tools when I'm working on it :)

If I could just do the same as the manufactors it would be a huge cut in time. I will maybe look at around.

I live in Alberta not Texas. We spell ours Grande Prairie, honest mistake :). But Wow that is really cheap for fiberglass, I payed 6 dollars per yard aprox. But The resin was 95 bucks for a 5 gallon pail :)

Hi Klassenkid, awesome boat you got there. All that wet foam and the lack of stringers would probably explain the stress cracks in your upper half. If it was mine I would be putting stringers in along with new foam. I think your hull is flexing too much creating all those cracks. Great work so far. The polyester resin will be just fine. I used epoxy on my first build and I loved it, but it IS very expensive as you mentioned. I'll be tagging along with this one. Your doing good, keep it up. Just my 2 cents worth. You got the resin for 95 dollars? Good price.

Thank you :), happy to have you on board. It seems to be unanimous.... stringers are going in!! Im thinking 2 would be sufficient from the transom to the front seats with a cross-member across the seat area. My only question is if i should get PT plywood for the stringers and transom, i dont want to wait a month to dry it out. Whats the benefits compared to regular plywood if im going to resin coat it anyway?

Thanks! I have always been a sucker for bright colours :D I never thought there would be another Grande Prairien on this. Almost any supplies i need i have to get from Edmonton, For example i want some 1708

Marine plywood is stronger and more durable than regular plywood, which has only three layers. Marine plywood has five or more layers that are bound together with waterproof adhesive, which allows it to bear heavier loads and repel moisture from its core. As a result, you can use a thinner sheet that will have the strength of a thicker, regular sheet of plywood. In addition, it doesn't have as many voids as regular plywood, which makes it structurally stronger. While regular plywood has little spaces and air pockets in each layer, marine plywood has substantially fewer. I think it is more about strength than water proofing (that's what the fiberglass is for).

Thanks Wisemsc, thats very informative. I think i will look around to see if i can get a hold of some. Im not too worried on strength, this boat has cheap ply for the transom that's also rotten and it still seemed solid to the point that i never thought it needed work, the floors where a different story.

awesome boat! I pull the top cap on my project and it made it some much easier on the grinding. Was not that difficult to put back on either. Good luck and may for "itch" for boat revitalizing grow! ;)

heres another picture of how the transom looks
add85307.jpg

Bad news first is when i cut out my deck the grinding was a little too much at one point i now have a repair through the hull

should i just make a mix of some resin and glass bubbles to fill this? It shouldnt be to much of a problem. I am happy today though!! My Marine Plywood is in!! i didnt get to order any 1inch since they didnt have any instock unless i wanted to pay double of what regular marine plywood costs  260 for a 8X4, no thanks!! So i have 3/4 and 1/2(mostly for the deck).

4 layers to make my 2in transom!

Klassin...looks like you are making great progress....How thick was that foam? Doesn't look to be much room for stringers....although I agree you will want to put some in anyway...I have seen other boatys on here that had just a cardboard tube covered with glass that served as stringers....might be an option, but let a pro get in here and fill you in on the best approach...

as stated before..I'm no pro, but I would repair that with a couple layers from the inside...then fill on the outside... that way you don't lose any strength in the hull there...

im sorry for the time away, i have been extremely hard at work with my new company. I have just recently torn out the transom and started doing some grinding.......... Grinding. It really doesnt help me rush back to my project. But I want to have it all back together by the end of the summer, so i better get a move on this. I also came back from Jasper last weekend and going to Vancouver this weekend to go sea fishing! :D:rolleyes: I GOTTA GET MOTIVATED!!!

Hahaha really? just cardboard tubes like from gift wrap? Or do you mean hard industrial cardboard tubes? I can see that working better for me since it would be round and easy to glass, short to probably the right height that i need.
