Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

I got one coat of epoxy on one side of the deck this morning. I'm hoping it sets up by this afternoon so I can flip them and get a coat in the other side.

The inner transom skin cleaned up pretty good with the soda blaster. I'm hoping to get it primed and painted this week.

I still have a bunch of these solid rivets to knock out. I do a couple a day and should be done in a couple weeks :D.

They love helping me out. It's always great to have their company.

I did get some sheets of aluminum lined up. Dad's work had some left over from a project so I'm getting them at cost. He said they are 5x10 and .050" thick. I'm getting them for $70 each. He said they normally sell them for $200. I told him to set 2 pieces aside for me.

check out my 1966 chrysler lonestar polara 254. it is a 19'6'' version of your boat. the boat is very strong--- i put a rub rail right over existing rub rail---it holds carpet in place. you can see it it the pic's. i turned mine into the badest side console on the water---2 livewells, cooler, fishbox, rod storage----anyway--just a thought. check out great lakes skipper for deals too.

mine did not have any ribs---you were lucky
good luck

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

This morning I got the transom cut out to the shape it's supposed to be. I made it about 3/4 inch wider than the original and I think I will need to trim a little more off but it fit pretty good. I then filled in my screw holes and the one void I found with thickened epoxy. I also got the rest of the rivets knocked out and removed the rest of the gunwales and what was left of the bow. I just need to make a few measurments and I will be able to get the new gunwales bent up.

I now need to powerwash and scrub the inside and get ready to gluvit and paint. The existing paint on the inside will get scuffed and I will paint with Rusto in rattlecans.

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

I just got done laying down another coat of epoxy but im having some troubles with it. It isnt laying down very well. After a couple minutes of sitting it gets an orange peel look to it and doesnt appear to be sticking very good. I sanded after the last coat and blew it off with compressed air before putting down this coat. My epoxy has been sitting for about a year but it has been curing fine. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

May have needed a better wipe down to get all the dust off... Or more aggressive sanding to give previous coat more tooth for the current coat to grab... It doesn't penetrate the previous coat like it would raw wood, so it often behaves much differently.....

good mixing of the resin pre & post catalyst? And does the epoxy your using have a 'dwell' time before you use it?

different heat & humidity levels don't really change ratios on epoxy like it does poly resin & MEKP, does it?

sorry, long day is catching up w/ me, I hope that ^^^ helps, have a great week

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

I sanded it really good with 120 and it was mixed thoroughly. I don't think it has a "dwell" time. I am using US Composites epoxy. The epoxy is 3:1 no matter what. They say it can't be changed.

I've had the orange peel thing happen before. If memory serves I think I was working in cooler temps. I have found that hot and dry is good stuff for curing epoxy (whenever you can help it anyway).:)

Hmmmm, after it's cured is it going to be a huge PITA to sand & re-coat?

It was around 70 degrees out but the humidity has been around 80 percent so that might be part of the problem

It seems to sand ok, just takes a little time.

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

I sanded down one of the deck pieces today and put down another coat and it seemed to lay down fine. I also picked up the two 3/8 x 1 pieces of aluminum I ordered a few weeks ago. These will serve as mounts for the new gunwales. I will have to drill and tap about 150 holes to get these mounted. Luckily I have two good drills and I will be able to powertap with the drill.
