Here is the orignal transom, it should be a breeze to cut the new one out.

I still have a big mess to clean up inside.

BN - That thing is built like a freakin' Sherman tank! With the way the ribs/trusses are made in her you could use 1/4" ply and the floor wouldn't flex. I see what you mean about the transom, more Sherman tank construction.

GA, she is built pretty solid. I thought about just putting 1/2" back down for the deck but I already have 6 or 7 sheets of 3/4 Auruco so I'm just going to go with that. Hopefully the weather cooperates so I can go fishing tomorrow and do a little more boatwork on Sunday.

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

Didn't get much done this weekend. Went fishing all day Saturday and all we got was two 6 pound catfish, two small crappie and a 12lb snapping turtle. The weather has been strange the last week with temps between 35 and 99 so I'm blaming it on that :D

Last night my wife help me laminate two pieces of plywood together for the transom so I just need to cut it out to size later this week. I'm going to make it about 3/4 of an inch wider as it didn't go completely to the sides. I also picked up a soda blaster at harbor freight today to clean the transom inner skin and around all the rivets so I can get good paint adhesion. I tried it out and actually worked pretty well. I'm not sure if my air compressor will keep up with it but we'll see what happens.

So how far down do you plan on stripping your Medallion? I'm still working on the getting the paint off of mine. It's a pain. How does the Soda blaster work? I've heard both good and bad about those.

I know what the PO was doing when he opened up the bow, but what was he thinking???

It will be getting stripped down to the bare hull. The paint will probably get stripped off the bottom and probably get left bare depending on any damage I find. The sides will get sanded with 220 and repainted. All of the aluminum gunwales, splashwell, and whats left of the bow will be removed and replaced with new. I only used the soda blaster for about 5 minutes today and it seemed to work pretty good. I only have a 26 gallon air compressor and it doesn't provide the recommended cfm for the soda blaster but I think it will work good for what I'm doing.

Are you planning on stripping just the outside down to bare or everything? I've been using Klean Strip ks3 and while it works, it's very harsh to work with. It also doesn't seem to remove the paint in certain sections either, such as the white colored sliding bow cap. Which model soda blaster did you get, the 15 or 40lb?

As far as the gunwales, splash-well and bow section goes, do you have another boat that you're using for parts? Or will you be making the new pieces from scratch?

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

The only part I plan on stripping down to bare is the bottom. The rest will just get scuffed up. I will use the soda blaster around the rivets as it's hard to sand around those little suckers. I got the 15lb one as it fit into my tight budget :D

The gunwales and splashwell will all be new fabricated pieces. My dad does sheetmetal work for a living so I have access to all the necessary equipment.

Ya they did quite the hack job up there.

This morning i got two of the deck pieces rough cut. I just have two more to cut out then i can get it set in to check fitment. The deck i pulled out was just one puece of ply layed lengthwise so I dont have any templates to work from.

Boatnutt == Congratulations on your decision to install 3/4 inch deck . I re-did my 67 Maritime., replacing 1/2 inch with 3/4 inch and the "old tank" feels so much stronger and dependable ,,it feels like a totally differnet boat !!

I might just have to pick up one of those soda blasters based on your results. Did you get the media from HF too?

That's awesome you have access to fabrication equipment and materials. I'm sure it comes in handy more than just with your boat.

I already had the 3/4 on hand so it was a no brainer. She should be rock solid when I get done.

I got the media from HF. I think it was like 33 bucks for a 50 pound bag. All that equipment will come in handy real soon :)

I just want to add one more thing. I highly recommend wearing a respirator or at minimum a dust mask when using the soda blaster. There is alot of fine dust and I'm sure it's not good to breathe alot of it in.

I think this would look good hanging off the back :D

I did get some ZC primer ordered. Hopefully I will have it early next week and I should be close to ready to paint the inner transom skin and insides of the boat. The soda blaster works pretty well for knocking of the little bit of corrosion I found on the inner transom skin.

Nobody said it was inexpensive.... Have you met the new Seven motors yet? I do have a line on an 85hp Johnson that will look fairly nice on a transom near me, eventually.

I'm not sure the Seven's come in a 16' tinny compatible size....

When do we get to the price is no object threads?? Not in WV anytime soon.

I'm not sure where you are out there in god's country, but Wally world has self etching &/or ZC in spray cans according to another thread.............

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

One of those motors would be awesome but a bit on the heavy side for my hull. Our local wally world does carry self etching primer but I havn't been able to find any ZC locally.

This morning I got the rest of the deck boards cut out and test fitted. They didn't fit quite like I wanted but turned out decent considering I didn't have any templates to work with. My epoxy is almost a year old so I put some on a scrap piece and will see how that cures. If all goes well I'm hoping to get the deck and transom in epoxy by the end of the weekend.

Our computer is down at the moment so I have to post everything from my phone but I have a bunch of pics to post up once the computer is fixed.

Re: 1969 Lonestar Medallion

My ZC primer came in today. Only took two days so I'm pretty happy about that. My cabosil should be here tomorrow. I'll be using that to thicken the epoxy for filling holes and such. My test piece that I epoxied yesterday seemed to set up fine so I should be good to lay some epoxy down this weekend. (3 day weekend :D)
