Made it half way through glassing the stringers in today... and ran out of resin. BOO!

Holding pattern, again.

Alright, perhaps spoke too soon on the funding! Out of the blue, some dude is driving a LONG way to come check out the motor this morning. Maybe I will have some funding after all! Scary thing: it is almost all going to go towards resin. BOO. Of course then I'll have to find a new powerplant too.

Not very exiting, but like I mentioned I did get some stringer glassing done...

Why is it every time I'm on here I get the urge to buy a Dodge Ram?

Big news... for me...

MOTOR SOLD! Finally.

I'm waiting to here from a guy who has a Merc 50 for reasonable price. Almost too reasonable. We'll see. Probably going to use the motor fund for more materials.

In the meantime, let's pour one out for ole' 25!

Best we stop now, a mod got onto a thread that discussed this & closed it.

We do not want to irritate our generous host, iBoats.com, by expressing opinions about how they operate our free forum's website;)

I frequent this site, & enjoy the benefits I get from using it. I'd hate to lose access to it.

PM me if you have questions, but not in open forum.

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

Well, I was GOING to get some resin with my motor sale fund, BUT...

I stumbled across a 50HP merc, which if you've been keeping up is exactly what I want for this boat.

The guy says it is a 1977 Mercury 500 model. Any thoughts?

I figured a great way to level out the boat in preparation for stringers/deck/transom was to attach some appropriately sized 2x4's attached from my stand to the chines at regular intervals. A bit of playing around, a few adjustments...

Boom, level to all sides and bow to stern. AND... she's rock solid. Doesn't move a bit if I walk in it and the floor is solid! Now I'm dreaming of stringers...

Paul, clarification question on the cradle as I need to build one for my project. Did you put vertical pieces at intervals along the Chine just like you did at the transom? Did you support the Keel at all?

Thanks for sharing your build, how is it going?

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

My keel has a big rubber guard on it, so I just rested it on the 2x4's. Then I leveled side-to-side along the chines. I ended up NOT leveling bow to stern because I had a good road map of where my original floor was, so I didn't feel it was necessary. It turned out nice and solid.

I've been slacking on my end! I ran out of resin a couple of weeks ago... along with money to buy more resin. I hope to remedy that this next week. Weather around here should allow me enough time to get the fiberglass portion of my work done before winter. We'll see...

Been slacking!

Actually I've been busy at work. Weather here also isn't fiberglass friendly. No heated shop!

I have access to a couple of large garages. I'm hoping the boss will let me take one over for the winter!!! Otherwise, I'll be back on it in March or April.

Very nice work so far. I'm a bit jealous of how far along you are. I've got a 68 larson 16ft that looks exactly the same as yours that I'm working on now and seeing this seems like I'm getting some free experience :) Fantastic wood work btw.

Is yours 16ft? The reason I ask is because of your stringer/bulkhead setup. It seems really beefy! You've got two small stringer sections running up from the transom that connect to a bulkhead. Why? Are you going to put access hatches for storage anywhere under the deck? Just extra vertical support? The original setup in this boat didn't even have the traditional wood stringer setup you find in many older boats. These/mine had Planks on top of foam until you get to the bilge and then where the stringers would be it was sprayed woven roven as the vertical support. I agree...too weird to explain. I'm wondering if a boat of this size needs such an extensive support structure under the deck? I'm not wondering because I think what you're doing is wrong, but more because my funds are dictating the idea of using less. I'm going to run two stringers on each side of the keel from the transom to the bow (up to where the original deck support ended) I'll put a bulkead under the front seats, and another one further back, and the sides will be filled with the expanding pour foam...but that's it. I'm wondering if I should do a bit more...we'll see.

Either way... Great job so far. Keep the pics coming! oh! I didn't have any of that weird foam stuff in mine. Must have been a 69 addition to these boats.

Re: 1969 Larson - Big Project

I had the same structure under my floor. It was SOOOOO rotted out that I couldn't even salvage any of it. Hence the reason I'm making my own new internal structure. It is definitely overkill, but should be far stronger than previous. And given the amount of funky glass and foam I removed, I'm guessing lighter too.

Stay tuned in the spring. After I get the floor done I have some big woodworking/fiberglass plans in mind for storage and paneling. We'll see if I can turn my vision into reality!
