Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

IM - When you said you were going to paint the motor I never thought you planned on using invisible paint on the lower unit. ;)

Take your time, you won't be missing the splash date by much. You have gone through too much hard work and grief getting to this point to rush now. J1 - remember? And picking up J2 out of the snow, too. And now "Northern Therapy" sees daylight.

Boy, does she look good. :D:D:D

Jas and GA - Thanks a bunch guys!! Ya it's just one of those things... like many I supose... it's nice to hit the date of a launch!!! As they say, close is good in horseshoes and handgrenades... now splash dates?!!!

As I sit on the front porch this fine evening I can only reflect on a most interesting day... so it started this morning with a massive flood in our lower level of the house!!! Yup... there was a solid inch of water this morning!! Yikes! Thinking it was from the biblical rain we had last night... we quickly discovered that it was actually our 5 mth old washing machine that had overflowed and flooded more than half the lower level!!! Things were literal floating!!! Amazing! So... we are now "camping" in the family room and living room!!! Kids are wired for sound as they think it is a blast... but it really does bring a new meaning to spring cleaning as literally everthing has been moved in the lower level and is either drying or up of the floor!!! Wild stuff.

Here's a snap of the water... as it's being cleaned up... not sure if ya can see the water in the photo...

IMAG0392.jpg

Good news is that everything will be organized and cleaned on any chance of mold/smell etc is being dealt with properly and proffessionally.

After the 8 hour "half move marathon", we dropped off the bottom end... and guess what... not only is it going to be a free fix... but it should be done by Wednesday!!! Then it just needs some "uninvisible paint" and it should be good to go!!!

Also, got the little boat off the trailer and assessed the trailer situation: Bearing seals are shot --- grease all over the wheels and there is a wierd thrumming sound when driving --- actually quite loud. Rollers to be replaced with carpeted bunks. Wood steps on the sides and adjusted rear guides to outwards. Quick coat of paint and voila!!

So an interesting day... :)

Here is the shot from my front porch as I type and the sun is just setting...

Have a super evening fellas!!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

When you get the rooms dried out don't forget the Gluvit. I've been "lucky" enough to have parts of my house flooded out once. I had about 3 feet in the muddle of winter cause by a torrential rain on top of 3 feet of snow. All the shovel walks turned into nice rivers right into my finished or rather used to be finished basement. What a mess!.

On the good news boat side - L/U back on Wednesday. Father's day is still a possibility. :)

GA - 3 feet Yikes!!! Man... any water is just no good!!!

Quick Update:

Trailer:
- Dropping it off tomorrow night to get the axles/bearings/hubs looked at. I'm going to let the experts look at this and see the appropriate course of action... the noise is pretty bad... so something is not right.
- Bunks, bolts and paint I picked up here at lunch

Motor:

- pickup Wed night the bottom end
- Paint I picked up today --- so just need to paint it and re-assemble!

So there is some work/time yet... but getting closer. Splash this weekend??? Not going to happen --- especially with the house situation --- really sounds like we are doing aerodynamic wind tunnel testing on a Starcraft in our house with 12+ large fans running 24/7!! But splash is coming soon... :D

I feel ya IM... been putting off my splash now for a couple weeks as when i fixed one motor problem another reared its ugly face. Finally got it all put back together and its only running on one cylinder... so i tossed in the towel and took it to the pros. Pretty sure its a carb problem just waiting on the confirmation from the mechanic

Keep on truckin! You'll see the water in no time!

Thanks man! Some times it is worth the piece of mind of getting someone to work on it who does it day in and day out --- especially on safety issues!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Ok... quick update...

- Trailer is in - Looks like 1 or more of the bearings are shot as well as both back seals. They are going to take a close look at the spindles to see if the bearings damaged the seals. I pick it up Friday night.

- The two coils I ordered are now on the engine --- so all 4 coils are new now as well as the plug wires. So check = done!
- Bunk boards are ready to go.
- Bunk carpet is ready to go.
- Engine cover is now ready to go for priming - I had to sand the jbweld I applied the other night --- had a crack in the the corner of the engine cover on the top --- looks good now.

So a little more progress. I also mapped out what is left to do... and surprisingly... what I thought was only going to be a couple of items grew and grew. There are a number of things left to do before splash. So... I gotsta get to it!!!! :D

Good news too --- it looks like the pressure valve on the washing machine failed which is why the machine just kept trying to fill and fill. Lots of action today with adjusters/contracters/more adjusters/moisture tester people/washing machine mechanics .... it was a revolving door day. But all good... moving in the right direction to getting our lives back to normal!!

Have a great Tuesday aft and eve fellas!!!

Hi Jim,
Just getting caught up on your thread or rather water/splash issues. Sorry to hear that your splash date is delayed...I'm kinda chuckling here, no not about your flooding or getting the jupiter ready, but my roof is leaking right now!! Its dripping down onto the kitchen floor, the weather has been wetter and cooler than normal and I really need to replace the roof...lol I have the materials ready, I just need some decent weather.
Glad your taking your time on the Northern Therapy, as the boat looks awesome. Sounds like there is progress on your flooding issue and that is great to hear.

El Jimbo....i think you're supposed to splash your boat by taking it to the water, not by flooding your driveway.......

"see, honey, all that time and money was worthwhile, how else would we float out of this flooded basement?" :D

OK, enough silliness. sounds like Murphy is well and truly determined to put a wrench in your plans and you're persevering. good on ya! and you just gave me another reason to put off replacing my 50 yr old Maytag.......

Thanks Rusty! NT will be ready to roll in no time now!!! --- sounds like flooding is becoming an issue ---- Not enough people using Gluvit i guess!! Good luck on your roof ---- it'll be warm and dry soon enough!

El Barato... LOL! Man you cracked me up!! My daughter was really concerned that she was going to float away in the night!!!!:D I told her "that's why Daddy built the boat!!!".

The salesperson told us that all new machines have a built in obsolecence of about 6-8 years.... not sure if he was serious or not... but really says alot these days about the quality of things... buy it, use it for a short while and pitch it. Our world is really becoming like the movie WALL-E!!!

El Jimbo On Standby...

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Trailer Update --- Bearings are done... in more ways than one!! 2 of the bearings were almost completely gone. The other 2 were heat warped and in bad shape. Both rear seals were shot. Spindles are good though... but the guy did say that I had maybe 1 or 2 trips left before I would be on the side of the road! At least I know that all is ok and I learned a lot more... so this is good.

Had new S hooks put on which have a safety clip part so that the S clips cannot pop off... no need for more expense here... So I pick it up Friday night as I am booked up with Family stuff tomorrow night and tonight I am picking up the bottom end with the kiddies!!!

Still movin' forward gents!!!

Hey Jim, sorry to hear about the basement that can be nasty, at least insurance is going to cover it. Boy your driveway looks a little busy.

The basement is now dry... so no more wind tunnel testing!

Yah... the Falcon has been "removed" as according to the Admiral our driveway would look "cluttered". Hmmmmm... I was thinking it would look fantastic. Ahhhhh well... just opinions!!

El Splasho!!! I like that!! LOL.... path to glory... not sure it will be glorious... but it will be a load of fun!

I picked up the bottom end of the motor tonight with the kids... with an incentive program of ice cream!! Hard to drag the kids to hop in the car for 2 hrs of driving on a beautiful evening with their friends wanting to play! So an incentive was rightfully required! Anyway, I can now move forward with final painting --- tomorrow eve after the family stuff??!!:)

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Moving along... Officially I no longer own a glass boat! Yup... I sold it tonight. Amazingly, I placed the ad at 2:00pm and it was sold at 3:30pm and gone by 8:00pm! Super nice guy too... came with a trailer and I loaded it up in less than 5 minutes. So down to just 2 tinnies and 4 motors!

The little boat that is no more....

IMAG0382.jpg

This morning I managed to get the motor cowling primed and I got the bottom end re-attached to the motor and primed as well... so some good progress in the right direction. Tomorrow night I pickup the trailer and then won't get back to things until Sunday aft as we have some family commitments this weekend!

Have a great night fellas!!

lol

Your drive way looks very organized/neat IMO

My Admiral has been very patient with my "clutter"

I'm just lucky I have that pad in the backyard. :D

But I still have stuff all over the place + the car I bought to be used as a commuter/beater, boat's have been sucking up the tire and windshield money...

Boats don't look bad back there, but boats + car looks...
Atleast only 2 neighbors get a good look of my backyard.
The one that might be annoyed has his view blocked by the Chief...

See it could be worse :D

Good that you got that bearing work done. Don't want issues on the way to the launch.
Going to agree with those above. Your driveway is very neat.
