Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Looks great, very innovative design. If those aren't SS brackets, you'll probably be having some rust issues, but not for a while. Maybe you can paint or coat them with something? Or not worry about it. If you can't see it, it's not there!

Thanks LL --- ya not SS... but like i said... I had em!!! They are actually tucked up and hidden... and none are on the floor --- they attach to the sides. This boat is covered when it is not in use... So I figure they are good for a while. When they rust out... I'll deal with it!! :)

Looks really good Jim, you have some real inovative ideas, I wish we were not so far apart I would like to sit in the SS201 with you and brain storm.

Thanks Glen. Me too... that's the prob with everyone living so far apart --- we are all "virtually" watching everyone build!!! Not quite the same as being there... but way better than nothing at all!! Call anytime to chat...

Looks great. Love the foam under the carpet on the bench idea.

Thanks Ez.

Ok. I gotta confession. So the Admiral and I were sitting in the boat while the burgers were cooking on the bbq, and a couple of things came to light. One: The steering wheel... the Admiral without hesitation felt that it was best in a go kart! With all the wood in the boat, she felt it just didn't fit. So... I get to pickup a new steering wheel! I thought it work fine... funny how things are...
Two: My spar varnish job on the dash and dash pad... in a word sucked in comparision to the rest of the boat. Considering it was the first to get sparred... and I know why --- used a brush vs foam brush. Gotta use the foam brush... works way better. So, tonight, the spar came off... what a pita. Stuff is hard is nails. Anyway, it's off and a fresh coat is on. Again... the Admiral was right. Man o man. I just hate that!

Anyway, it's comin'.

Thanks guys.

And was the Admiral making motorboat sounds? That means she's ready to hit the water. :D It's a good thing Mrs. Motion had the wooden wheel idea. Now you have to go that way cause she's never going to let you forget.

IM - You are doing a fantastic job! The family is gonna be proud to cruise with you. Heck, so would I.

Done. Glen... when the Admiral gives permission, I don't hang around and ask why... done. Bought the middle of the two options in your list there. Love it. Thanks a bunch for the links man!

that's why she's the Admiral and we're but the Chief Engineers

it's actually a good thing you live so far from me. i'd feel so guilty about drooling on your nice boat.

i haven't had any luck finding SS angles but you can make a decent substitute by cutting the 2x2 alum L-channel they have at Slowes et al into short lengths with a metal blade in the jigsaw. but if you're boating in fresh water, it will likely be 10+ yrs before you have to worry about it

B2 - thanks man... and ya even when the Admiral isn't right, she needs to feel that she is right!!! In the is case, she really is right.
I will use the plastic steering wheel in the Falcon... so really not a loss... just a re-allocation.

But it is nice to have a little treat... especially for the one thing that you hold-touch in the boat every time its used!!!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

Gents... once again I am afraid the Admiral is quite likely right...

After finding out from my mechanic that the very likely reason that some rather expense piece broke on my car that joins the transmission to the engine from towing heavy loads, the Admiral has strongly suggested that I need to "just get over it and find a more suitable tow vehicle".

Ya see, I like to keep my cars ---- my last car a 96 Camry went to 186k miles before the frame rotted out. My wife's Mazda 6 wagon is 8 years old... but my Malibu is only 6 years new with only 100 miles!!! And nowhere near death. But, I get it. The admiral thinks it's silly to start towing with an 8 year old car after breaking the younger car!!! And even more foolish to push the car again after breaking it pretty badly already. Ugghhh... I really don't like spending money!

Sooooo, tonight the family and I are going to test a gently used Toyota Rav4 V6 Sport. Seams to fit the bill --- tows up to 3500 lbs, has 4 wheel drive, is actually reasonable on fuel (27 mpg US highway) and fits all of us and our gear. A guy I work with has one and swears buy it. I hope that it is alright and that I fit in it (I don't fit in most vehicles... kind of a pain really!).

Anyway, wish me luck gents!!!

OH NO! don't tell me that, I just bought an 05 Malibu last week & plan to do a little towing with it!!

You are like me with vehicles, I like to keep 'em until they're all used up. Traded in my 02 Impala w/ 192,500 miles on it on the 05 and after getting to the car dealer, it wouldn't start and had never started again 3 days later when I picked up the new one. That's the second car I've traded in that wouldn't start after delivering me to the dealer to pick up the next one.:D

I hate buying cars mostly because I hate dealing with the BS and lies of car salesman. You didn't ask for advice, but I'll give it to you anyway. :p Know what you want, what it and your trade are really worth, be willing to walk out if you are not getting at least very near what you want money-wise, and stick to your guns. Remember, there is no such thing as that one perfect car. Another one will always come along.

Good luck! and it's great that you have the boss's blessings!!

Re: 1968 Starcraft Jupiter - Rebuild

LL --- Your boat/trailer/motor is lighter than what I have... plus I have been (and will continue) towing trailer loads of rocks! from up north. Also, I have the car fully loaded when we go... and its about 250 miles round trip x 20+ trips a year.... so a little is fine --- a lot is not. Plus we go camping way up north a couple times a year pulling the boat + gear + all of us!! So, what I am doing really prolly does necessitate a more suitable vehicle.

Summary: Light load, short distance = ok.

Yup, that's what I'm counting on! I'll only be going a few times per year, all easy highway trips. Good luck in your search!
