I'm thinking five coats maybe more. That should finish base coat blue then flake.
My technique is very simple.
Coat number one 50% raw resin 50% gel, shot through a dump gun, mixed at 1% (Florida heat).
This fills most of the imperfections and keeps down pinholes. The resin I get from a place that manufactures fiberglass train bodies. It's a true laminating resin but it must have some kind of wax because after a few hours it has no tackiness. They go through a couple of barrels a day so it's always very fresh.
Let each coat cure minimum of 2 to 3 days.
Sand that off with 50grit on a da sander.
Second coat 50% duratec 50% gelcoat. Shot through a 3 mm tip spray gun 1%.
Sand it all off with 220 grit. Lather rinse repeat until all lumps and bumps disappear. I get a good film thickness and all the pin holes are filled.
Last coat gets sanded 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000 dry.
Buff with rag pad 1000 grit aqua buff then 2000 grit aqua buff foam pad..
