Yeah LL's motor sounded quite normal at WOT and he was over. I guess that settles it. :)

Four foot of track seems to be a little excessive to me on a 15" boat. How many people do you plan on taking out on that little guy? I would think that three would be the max, which would be 9 rods total. Just buy some 4 pole rod trees and track from MAD dock systems in Harrison, you can rig the whole boat for less than what you have into just the berts tracks. I would save the good stuff for the islander. Thats gonna be your show off piece anyways, right?

Yes, I totally agree that four feet of track is way too much for a 15" boat, and I'm not even a fisherman!!

Just pulling your chain GA.....

Jas, very nice work. Almost one down, and one to go....we're going to be racing this winter....

If I only had one instrument on any boat it would be a tach. I have the ebay knockoff version of Teamsters tach on my pontoon, and it is working fine for the third season on 2 different motors. I think it cost about $20 delivered.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Just a thought. I recently purchased a complete set of gauges still in the instrument panel on ebay for less than $25.00 + shipping.

I hear ya, that is exactly how I picked up my gauges for the Islander actually. It was a sweet package!

It seems to me it would be pretty helpful in the overall life expectancy of your motor. F'rinstance if I had no tach, to my ears, my motor would have sounded fine to me today, but the tach told me that at WOT I'm running 500-700 rpm over the max recommendation. That can't be good long term I wouldn't think. Also lets you know if you're in the range at idle speed too, could come in pretty handy if you do have problems.

Anyway, that's this amateur's way of thinking. One of my goals was to not have to tear into things again any time soon in the future, I wanted to get it right the first time.

Yeah LL's motor sounded quite normal at WOT and he was over. I guess that settles it. :)

Yah, tach is going in for sure. Thanks for chipping in fellas!:)

Though I do believe I have a Q that I'll post up in a min or so....

Thanks Dave! Race eh, against each other or race against the weather (ready by spring)?:)

Dood, couldn't agree more Golden Arrow! BUT, I have something up my sleeve! You'll see, and you'll like it, trust me buddy! I love how you think that I am steeling those 4' Berts Tracks from the Islander and I didn't even say I was doing that, hah!!! (Actually, that's what I am doing:D)

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK, question for the J/E OB guys, three actually, with multiple parts (sorry)...

Question #1

So here is my MWS Wiring Harness...
WirningHarnessMWS.jpg

I actually did a little work this morning and have everything hooked up on the control side with the exception of:

The fat 8 pin plug - I am understanding this would hook to my tach providing tach info as well as "system check". Am I correct on this?

The two sets of 3 pig tails - I am understanding the upper set in that diagram (black, purple, white/tan) is for a trim gauge and the lower set (black, purple, gray) is for old school tach without "system check". Am I correct on this?

Question #2

So, with those eBay tachs in mind up there ^^^^^ I am assuming that I can go with an old school tack and simply not use the fat 8 pin plug. True?

Question #3

Lets say for the sake of argument I went with the "system check" tach (engine being too hot might be nice to know I guess) (check engine too, course if I knew what to check anyway).

I'm not running an oiler on this OB, premixing. So, I am assuming that the "Low Oil" light will be on constantly. I am also assuming the "No Oil" light will be on constantly. Am I correct on that? No biggie either way really.

Here's the part I'm worried about...

Because I'm not going with an oiler, is the warning horn going to be constantly going off if I go with the system check set up????

Thanks in advance fellas!

I think so on the horn/alarm on the system check without the vro,...I seem to remember problems like that with one in our fish camp one year,..

Maybe one of the more smarter guys will chime in on that,...

I'm certainly no expert on this, but did look into it when I was thinking of converting to pre-mix. I can't remember which ones, but there are 1 or 2 wires that you can disconnect/cut to disable the low- or no-oil warnings. Try searching on "remove VRO" or "VRO conversion" or something like that. I think that member Joe Reeves made some posts on this, you can search for his posts.

Pretty sure you can do it the way you want to, with pre-mix and no signals going off.

Are you going to run a temp gauge on her? I would just as soon see how hot she is rather than how many rpms shes running. Have to install one on every boat the old man gets if it is not equipped when he gets one. He loves them jonnyrudes

purple is an ignition switched positive, gray is the pulse feed for the tach, black negative.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

OK, decision made. I sniped a nice lookin standard Teleflex tach on eBay for $35, so that's whats going in. Identical as the 2nd one I listed up there ^^^. I think the white face should match well with the white console.

purple is an ignition switched positive, gray is the pulse feed for the tach, black negative.

Yah, I got that part aok. I'm now wondering about how to light it. I wonder if I can just put a jumper on the hot (purple) from the "IGN" to the "LT"? That way it's lit when I have it running? Any of you guys know out there?

Just got word my decals are done and on the way,

Got all the rigging completed on the OB side, so pretty happy there:D

And, I have the stern hatch/bench/bulkhead built, painted and into position for a dry fit now it just needs to be fastened. I'll shoot up some photos of that in a bit.

Just keeping the blades turning here:)

Have an awesome Sunday guys!

Good buy on the tach. I believe you can do that. On my tach/gauge, the light power is supplied by a separate wire in the circuit for the lights so it's lit when the lights are on. I don't see any reaon you can't wire it to be on all the time while running if you want.

One thing I sort of anticipated, but didn't do anything about, was that I would need a compartment of some sort or some way to keep misc. things that I take with me from flying around while underway. I like your built-in storage you've made, I'm thinking that when I get to tinkering, I might make something for under the front deck for camera, binos etc. Or under the seat, I haven't decided yet.

Have a fun Sunday, goodbye to daylight savings time!

Duh!

Oh wait you weren't talking to me.

On mine I tagged the tach light in with the nav lights. Figured I wouldn't need it lit unless I was running and needed the lights. Plus the light switch was closer.

Well, I have been kinda thinking that I'd go with those simple battery operated clamp on style nav lights - mainly cuz I want a nice clean deck/gunwale. Buuuuuuuuttttt, I think I'm going back on that now and will just wire up removable nav lights. So yah, I'll just hook up the tach light to that. Cool:)

I've got a couple of the clamp on nav lights and they're junk. (at least the Atwoods) There's no seals to them so the insides corrode in no time flat. And that's with me taking the boat out of the water after every use. Removable ones are the way to go in my opinion.

I think you will be happier with permanent lighting hardware long term.

Attaching and removing the lights would be a drag in my opinion.

You won't even notice the fixture once the tracks and all that goes with them is installed:D

I love that you pilfered those from the Islander, good call on that;) (it's for the greater good:D)

Yah you guys are right, those clamp on's are cheapo.

Mike, yah steeling the Bert's Tracks for the Jet will be cool. But, I did pick up some eye candy for the Islander;)
