Dude, I was away for awhile and I missed a ton of your work. That boat looks awesome, you should take orders on line and sell them.

You have done all the hard work putting on the outboard is easy. You will want to feed the steering cable into the tilt tube before you bolt the engine down. The wires only connect on way and the throttle cables get hooked to the controls first and then you attach them to the engine. Make sure the controls are in neutral and the idle lever is pushed all the way down. You adjust the cables to the engine make sure the engine is in neutral and the throttle is closed. Adjust the cables so that they slip in with no fighting. I generally do the gears first then the throttle cable. When you drill your holes for the motor use the top holes in the transom bracket for your guide and on the bottom slots drill your holes at the very top of the slot. If your Jet is like mine you will want to raise your engine up all the way. I did my 35 triple by myself it weighs 177 lbs I used a cheap come along to hoist the outboard. I did have to get my wife to hold the wrench when I tightened the bolts although she really wasn't impressed with that but she got over it.:)

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Thanks for the advice, hidef!

I'm not too big a guy so I'll need my beefy sons to help me get it the few feet out the shed door. Once it's on the come-along, should be pretty smooth after that. I had made a template of the mounting bracket, but later decided to just put the motor on and then mark my holes, reduces the possibility of error. I plan to drill the holes as you recommended.

My 1/2" SS bolts, washers and nylock nuts came in a couple days ago. I also have the oil tank & hose with wire & a plug on the end; gas tank & hose; battery.

I still need:

- throttle & shift cables
- 10' extension wire harness
- battery cables ** what do I need for that? (is there a special length or connectors? I also need to connect my 10 ga. accessory wires to the battery posts)

Am I missing anything?

Hey Lake - call your local rental outfit. You might be able to rent an engine hoist for less than buying something you'll only use once. And the hoist is worry free, too. Just a thought.

Thanks, I thought about that, but didn't see how I would be able to move it out of the shed & onto the soft ground about 8" below without a lot of struggle or tipping. As soon as I can get the hook in the lifting ring, I should be golden.

You will want the proper battery cable from BRP. It has the proper ends for your engine. The part # I quoted is from a 2003 Fifty two stroke. Its like 6 feet long I mounted my battery on the port side to help offset my weight in the boat.

I just ordered the battery cable, harness extension and 2 control cables. Hope to get the motor mounted as soon as I can corral a son. Your specific help is greatly appreciated!

As a side note (to avoid reading the whole tread for a third time), we you able to salvage and rebend your old transom cap to fit the new shape (raised transom) or did you buy something new for it? If you bent it flat, how did you do it? If you bought something new, what did you get and where? Thanks!!

Sorry I missed answering this question before!

I had to make a new transom cap. It goes straight across.

I used 2" x 1" x 1/8" aluminum channel for the top, and filled in the extra 1/4" on the thickness with a length of 1/4" x 3/4" aluminum bar for a spacer. The 1/4" spacer bar is on the interior side:

It will meet perfectly with the corner caps once they are installed. Originally I thought I'd have to cut them, but with the 19" transom height recommended for my motor, they were just right. (Phew! Don't want to defile an old Starcraft part!!)

Thanks. It really is pretty straightforward, it was a little daunting to me since it was the first time I did it and I basically had no clue what I was doing. Couldn't have done it without this forum!! I was pleased with how it turned out.

I'm about to drill the mounting holes in the transom and a couple questions come to mind, since I only want to do this once! :p

Is it a good idea to drill a smaller pilot hole to guide the larger drill bit through?

Are 9/16" holes good for 1/2" bolts, or just go with 1/2"?

start smaller. then gradually work your way up to 1/2 bolts

btw, only thing i'm worried about making my boat a long shaft is if it will support the new motor seeing as the main supports are at the bottom. did you reinforce the top?

I just got finished drilling 3/16" pilot holes so the large bit wouldn't walk from my punch marks, then bored them out to 1/2".

I only ended up extending the transom 3" so I'm confident that the 1-1/2" board will support the weight. If you look at the taller transoms anyway, the knee braces do not go any higher on them than the shorter transoms. There is no additional support at the top but the thicker transom cap I made add some stiffness, I'm sure.

As a rule the pilot hole should be the same as the web thickness of the next drill. For a 1/2 drill start with a 3/16. There is clearance in the engine mount casting for the bolts so you can drill a 1/2" hole for a 1/2" bolt in the transom. The bolt will be a bit undersize. You can go to 9/16 if your not comfortable with getting the locations close enough. Don't forget to bed the bolts with something when installing.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Thanks MichaelP, I did check the clearance of the bolts in the mount before I started and felt confident that I could get the locations close enough, if not I will drill out another 1/16. Don't worry, 5200 and I have become very good friends during this project! :D

Now I've discovered, thankfully beforehand, a broken ground wire on the trim/tilt unit & trying to think of a good solid way to reattach it to the connector. I don't see any way to get to the bolt that holds it on.
