Btw, I now have a new rule: NO SUBWAY SANDWICHES ON MY BOAT-EVER! Probably stupid superstition but each time we brought those sandwiches on board we had problems. Afterall, the sandwiches are often called "submarines". I want my boat to stay on the surface, not Dive! Dive! Dive!

I then took the boat back to the lake to again continue the break-in. This time, we didn't get Subway sandwiches. We also saw a double rainbow on our way to the lake. I'll post a pic of that once I get it downloaded to my computer. This could only mean that good luck was gonna be with us. And sure enough, all worked out well.

I completed the first 2 hours of break-in and a bit more. The only other requirements for the break-in are to avoid continuous full throttle operation for "the next few hours" and to double the oil for the first ten hours. I now have 3.75 hours logged. I'm gonna try to get to 10 hours before next week.

The last thing to do was the cowl. I actually like the appliques on the 1961 parts motor better than those that were on my 1963. Therefore, I refurbished the top of the 1961 cowl and the bottom of the 1963 cowl. I did, however, keep the appliques that explicitly said "Starflite V".

It wasn't a perfect paint job, but for a beginner without much time, I believe it turned out well.

I first sanded down the top and applied Bondo in some areas where I found some gouges. I then went over that with high-build primer. Then, because I was topcoating with a yellow that doesn't cover dark colors very well, I went over some areas with white primer. Then I topcoated and clearcoated. All paint was from spray cans. It was the same paint that I used on other parts of the motor.

I also had some of the appliques bead blasted at the local auto machine shop. This took off the damaged chrome-like finish and gave the parts a nice dull look that I like. I cleaned and painted the other appliques and I clearcoated all of them.

I didn't want to use the foam stuff as a sound deadener so I went with Dynamat. It's the same stuff that I used to line the air boxes. It's a bit heavier than the foam, but not too bad. And after running this motor wide open, I can say that it works very well.

Notice how you can see the end of the rainbow? Very ironic since it ends at that building complex. That's the State Penitentiary at Rockview, a.k.a. "The Rock". Perhaps the Leprechaun had one too many and got himself into a scrape with the law
