Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Haha. That glue is still sitting there. I will attack that when I do the sanding the next time. The lawn is past due- two weeks- I couldn't cut last week because of the rain. I thought about trials in the pool but unfortunately it's onl 14'X28' so I won't get to far before it runs ashore.

Here is a better representation of the first voyage

It's a good feeling when you can start to see the end of the tunnel. Great job on the boat, again. You will have a masterpiece when she's done. So, I guess now we know where the term 'bucket seats' came from.:)

Looks good...now, I am a minimalist, so when I look at your seat layout...especially the one with the bucket, I see lots of deck space taken by fixed seats. Have you considered two "bucket" type seats..pilot/copilot...and removable plank seats so you can change your seating and deck space according to the purpose of the voyage? Fishing for two, cruising for four, etc.?

That boat is looking real nice with the top back on. I bet you are relieved.

Thanks guys for the replies!
Tallcanadian- right on with the "bucket seats!"
Frisco- it was a relief when we "finally" got it on.
Tmcalavy- I thought about a hundred different options with seats. But, the main reason for the cushier back to backs is because I have a 2 and 4 year old and I want them to be comfortable. Also, looking around I really haven't found anything else that would fit 4 comfortable seats in that close a quarters(36-40"). Those will be the last things I buy so I am still open to suggestions but the main thing is the kids being comfortable

You can either do 2 back to back loungers or 2 buckets and 2 jumps. The loungers would be much more economical although I gotta say, I love my buckets.

Here is a close up of the trim piece and the paint on the lip that I am removing. Hopefully you can see it in the pics.

Before- with the red paint on the lip of the trim piece

After being scraped with a razor blade and sanded with 150 grit. I may just sand the entire trim piece up to 220 grit, wipe it with "never dull", and call it done. This trim piece should be fun trying to tape it off to avoid paint when I re-paint her:confused:

Got half of the trim to go then I'm calling it a night- I'm pooped!

This is the same trim that I had on my AT and I had the same results when priming. I ended up removing the trim and replacing it with the black "clip-on" rubber trim that is used in the auto industry to line the edges of interior trim typically around the doors. It comes in black and it looked really good. If your trim is like mine, there may be a few spots where they failed to hit the fiberglass with the rivet and there were lots of loose spots. I'm happy with replacing it.

She's looking good Mick. I'm working on replacing all of the wiring on my AT. I framed in the new windshield and have the seats to build risers for and line-x the interior of the hull and she's done. She's all painted up and I'm anxious to start using her again. The fishing season has arrived here and I fear I may hit the tail end of the Spring Chinook run. Best of luck!

EZ- yeh the back to back are more economical. The other reason I like the back to backs is because I want that room in the back of the boat for fishing, and for climbing in and out of the boat.

Donkey- Nice to here from you- glad you-re making some progress. As far as the trim piece goes, I only had one area like you mentioned that the rivet didn't hit. I filled that with some fast epoxy and that problem was solved.

I intend to tape the it up real good before priming and painting- even if it takes me a couple hours to tape it up. When I was scraping the paint of mine I used a razor blade and I put the tip into the boat paint as I was going along- intending to make a valley so paint can't build up on top of it. We'll see if it works.

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Got some time on the boat tonight. I started hand sanding(no orbital this time around) all the filler spots. I also sanded about 80% of the top with 100 grit. After I'm done with the 100 I will clean her up, go for another round of filler and then 150 and I should be just about ready for primer. Again- easypoxy recommends 150 grit for a final sanding.

Here are the pics- I don't miss the dust! At least there isn't as much filler on the top as there was on the bottom. The tradeoff though is all the curves and such as opposed to the straight runs on the bottom. If you are going to restore a boat you can't win:p

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Hey Arch- Two nights ago I was on the boat again for about an hour:( I did get the rest of her sanded down, vacuumed and wiped down with a wet towel.

Hopefully tonight I get around to the second round of filler and then more sanding Saturday.

Next week is our last week of games. I still have work for my class to do but at least I will have more energy after baseball is done to get out on her more often.

Last night I hit the wall, after I put my daughter to bed at 7:30 I crashed in my bed and didn't wake up until my alarm went of at 6:20. I guess my body said you NEED sleep:rolleyes:

Mick you are starting to remind me of architecture school....we used to go days without sleep....I remember turning in projects, then hitting the bed.......you would wake up later wondering what day it was! I slept almost 2 days one time, freaked me out!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks bob, arch and tink.

Yeh arch I know that feeling! It was pretty freaky!

Well, no work on the boat this weekend:(

We had a night game on friday, and we finally celebrated my birthday(5/5) today(5/9).

Tomorrow night I will be working on work for school so this weekend turned out to be a bust on the boat project!

I hope all of your projects are going well.

I will be back on the boat soon!
