I wouldn't put any more parts on the motor until you get the compression problem resolved. Warming up the motor isn't going to increase compression to where it needs to be. Try spraying some Seafoam Deep Creep in the cylinders and letting them soak for a few days. Or remove the exhaust covers and take a look at the rings. See if they are stuck. If that's not the problem, next is to pull the head, inspect the cylinder walls, replace the head gasket.

Doesnt have to be warm nor do you need to adjust the throttle to WOT, will make no difference whatsoever. If you dont believe me, try it.

please let me insert this link i quickly googled...

http://www.search-autoparts.com/searchautoparts/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=16170

the only thing you are right- because its a 2stroke- WOT or not is not nearly that essencial like in a 4stroke. but of course warm up the engine since the rings work better in warm condition.

cheers !

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

Hello all, Im new to the forum, have been lurking a bit, decided now would be an appropriate time to come on board.

Ok, so Im going to hop on in here on this particular motor...

I just purchased this motor from seahorse197220 and I plan on doing a full restore of it. Ive backread some of the issues here, and I plan on doing a good compression test on it. Overall, the motor doesnt look too bad, but it is going to take some time and ALOT of pictures to tear down completely. Im still a newb here too, but seahorse197220 gave me a fair deal on the motor and Id love to breathe some new life into it. I know that I could probably pick up a newer model, but Im a fan of the character of these old motors and trust them (when running correctly) far more than anything new.

As of now the only motor I have in solid running condition is my QD-16 (1955 seahorse 10 HP).

Im sure Im going to be asking alot of questions as I go since Im just starting into the hobby, but Im sure Ill be fine.

I would like to say thanks to Seahorse for the fair deal on the motor.

Its going to take some time, but Im ging to start by getting to the bottom of the compression numbers. In the meantime, would someone point me in the right direction for a head gasket and piston ring kits? Id like to start formulating a plan on where to locate some of these parts in the event I would need them...

Thanks in advance!

Scratch that, found the parts I was looking for... Now to find out if I need them, and that will have to wait until morning.

LOL I love the goofball Krout. I had to laugh a bit. I can say Krout, because I are one too. LOL
Yea, I'm one of those guys who likes "grandpa motors". I have several good ones in my collection, that I wouldn't be afraid to spend a day on the lake with. My newest is a 1974 and it's small enough to mix drinks. LOL

I think it's funny the OP has a 57 Lark, with a Big Twin starter and bracket, when I have a 57 Big Twin with a Lark starter and bracket. :D

I think a nice re-paint and your old "Grandpa" will look mighty nice. Soak the pistons and rings with Sea Foam and the compression will improve. Either your compression guage is inacurate, or your rings are just sticking in the grooves bad. Your paint is not discolored, so I don't believe your motor was overheated.

Below is a few of my choiced "Grandpas" :D:D

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

Hopefully I can get my hands on a free manual for this motor... Tool wise I hope I have everything I need for this project, I know as far as paint goes Im good to go, but the reality of it is paint doesnt make anything run good. Im a little hesitant to just tear into this big twin / lark hybrid, but have a feeling that it should probably be done in order to give it a full inspection and thorough mechanical cleaning.

And from this point on, I think it would be appropriate to begin in a new thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=546655&p=3751101#post3751101
