No problemo. We've all been there, that's why we're here. Happy tinkering.

Is that manually pulling it over?

I will, just trying to get it going. Just order the impeller today. Is there something miss up front of the carburetor? working on getting the manual. I am not sure about the compression relief.

you are missing the silencer fore of the carb

Silencer, got it. I will order that also. The compression test was with the electric start. Also, How do I pull the flywheel?

those compression numbers are on the weak side......you may want to get some other opinions on it before you start buying parts.

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

Agree, you are not going to run right with compression that low. Most of my Big Twins from '55 to '58 are in the 125psi to 145psi range.

Pull the head before buying anything and lets figure out what is going on.

BTW, that silencer is not something that you can order. Post a wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize or call a salvage yard listed in the FAQS

from the european side of view on the one hand its an old piece of metal ready to be thrown away , on the other hand this engine is far older than me and what a fantastic piece of art !!! the compression shows this grandpa exhausted its life, its tired. so when interested in restoring it- rebuild it , if interested in just boating sell it for a few bucks to anybody and try something newer.

cheers !

with all do respect, old pieces of metal dont get thrown away ( especially old ob's) , old metal gets recycled. and that "old grandpa" may just need a shot of "whiskey" to free up his stiff joints! dont bury "grandpa" just yet, there could be another 50 years of good service there, with minimal $$.

glad im not a grandpa in europe!!! lol

lets take a shot of canadian whiskey and let go boating ! i never saw an ob aloder than a 1977 mercury 50 hanging in pieces on a marina for museum . here in germany we ride EFi or direct injected outboards, so i,m just stunned what piece of grandpas you hang on the transom !

:) I love towing in brand new $10 000 motors with my "grandpas"

I dont think Ive ever owned a motor as new as 1977, I do have a '76 55hp on my fishing boat if that counts.

Half the fun of using vintage motors is tracking down parts, learning new/old things, bringing them back to life with your own two hands and meeting new people who share the interest. It may not always be easier, but it's a lot more fun.

Warum so einfach wenn es so sch?n kompliziert geht?

Re: 1957 evinrude 35hp problems running

The compression numbers are very low. This could be due to several things from easy to hard:

Testing procedures
The gauge used
Low battery voltage
Poor electrical connections
Weak starter
Head gasket leak
Stuck piston rings
Worn piston skirts
Worn/scored cylinders

and more.

Before removing the head to inspect...make sure the easy stuff is double checked first!

Wow... I've hardly ever run an engine newer than '77 either. I run 50's and 60's engines daily in the summer... You guys must have a lot of extra cash over there!

Before we get carried away and I cry, what is the right way to do a compression test

we do not have cash for fuel ! currently 1.70? or rougly 2.25 $ per litre ! i want prices like you have in USA...

@seahorse : warm up the engine , make sure you crank from a fresh battery , give WOT ( but without gear !) , crank until no more rise in pressure occours . look if the cranking speed seems normal or slow ( to exclude a weak starter or poor electrical connections)

Doesnt have to be warm nor do you need to adjust the throttle to WOT, will make no difference whatsoever. If you dont believe me, try it.
