Just to add another layer of complexity - because we know things aren't complex enough already - in addition to aligning the grain of the plugs. you might want to think about matching the run-out in the grain of the plugs to the run-out of the piece you're installing them in to. I don't know if I can explain it but if the grain of the wood the pieces are cut from are not cut perfectly parallel to the grain you have run-out. This causes the pores in the grain in wood to exit at a slight angle. When it's varnished and you look at it in sunlight, from some angles it seems to glow and in the opposite direction it looks dark. My boat has a number of plugs where the run-out of the plugs is backwards and in certain light conditions they glow like little light bulbs. Just something to think about. I agree with the others though they are gonna look sweet!
Half of the top is now plugged and part of it sanded .. Should have more done but football seems to get in the way this time of year .. Kinda slow and tedious but the plugs look much better than the filler so I guess it’s worth the effort in the long run ..
I got the rest of the plugs installed on the top planks .. Still need to do the rub rails and a few other areas .. Hope my block of mohogany is enough .. Gunna be close ..
Also trying out this 2 part wood bleach I picked up .. Just wanted to bleach the spots first then probably use the oxolic acid bleach to do the whole area ..
Yeah Mike , I really need to pick up the pace if I’m gunna be done or at least mostly done by March ..
The Zinsser stuff seems to have worked pretty well for the most part . I did a 2cnd application to those nail spots last night after I sanded the rest of the plugs down .. We will see how well coat # 2 did this afternoon . Then I need to change my plug cutter to a size bigger for some more plugging ...
Have a great Tuesday and please remember to go VOTE !!!
