Re: 19' Maxum Bowrider Project

Topside and Cap have no damage. I could count all cracks/nicks on one hand, but this is not the reason for me trying to 'cover' perfectly fine layer of gelcoat.
I am doing the deck, as well as the back area of the boat where new bench, sport seating, will be custom fiberglassed. Top side will flip up exposing the engine bay and back compartments. I will try to make it as seamless as possible. Obviously I will need to paint it, including the deck, with either gelcoat or paint. I am leaning toward the paint, especially inside of the boat, in the corners where I wouldnt be able to reach with buffer.

Ive done alot of awlcraft m8..and I would strongly recommend you Dont squirt this on your boat. For Many reasons.
YD.
Could you elaborate more why wouldnt you advise using Awlcraft?

Do you plan on priming ?

I just think myself its more durable with gel ( they have small buffers for the corners ( your going to have to sand to prep in any way you go ) its just a matter of sanding and buffing with gel ) .

Im not totally against awlcraft..but I also dont know the extent of your experiance.. If you think you can do it with awlcraft..then you can do it with anything :) .

Didnt work at the boat much. But Ive managed to finish main harness and wiring for new dash.

Molex Connectors and Housing (male/female).
Since I have regular crimp tool I crimped best i could and soldered contacts for extra security.

That is a nice looking boat and I wish I had a tower for mine. I'll have to keep an eye on this thread as well. Hopefully I will have a little time off next week to get back on mine. Good luck with the rebuild. Thanks, Steven

I'm right there with you. The interior on my '93 Maxum 1900 is shot, and have considered doing wrap around seating. Would love to see your finished interior so hurry up. :D
I also have to get a new engine, and am planning on painting when the weather warms up.

Keep up the pics.

Re: 19' Maxum Bowrider Project

Im replacing all the stringers, engine mounts and transom.
Ive managed to remove most except from the front where cap is getting in the way. Removing all screws/rivets to get the cap off requires two people, Im missing that 2nd person so it gets difficult at times.
Ill put some progress pics tonight.
My deadline to do the stringers, transom, pour the foam and cut the deck to size is by end of Dec.

Looks awesome. My Maxum is older but I really like the look of the 1990+ ones.

I'd second the wetsand and buff of the existing gelcoat. Gel is so much thinker that you can take a good bit off. Paint is not a great option and should be a last resort, but you'd be surprised how much old gelcoat can be cleaned up.

Did you already get rid of your back to back seats? I went captains chair on one side (that I haven't bought/built yet) but your would be a great replacement for the port side if you still have em. If you don't my plan will be to take out the back to backs and build an L shaped couch along the port/back side with a tilting backrest where the port passenger chair is to preserve a forward facing seat but have the option of a back facing lounger.

It's not the condition of the gelcoat i am concerned.
I will be fiberglassing extra parts to the cap. They will have to be painted.
Existing gelcoat darkened and I rather re-gel the whole cap with fresh looking white coat rather than color match already yellowish gel.

I kept most of the parts off the boat, If you or anyone else is interested in picking them up you are welcome to do so. I accept beer or food moneys ;)

Well, spraying the gel looks like the way to go then. I'd do the gelcoat for repair purposes as well as durability.

Where are you located? You can update your profile with that or shoot me a pm if you don't want to advertise it.

Its funny, I started out just wanting to do basicly the same thing you wanted to do to your boat. Now I am also dong the same. New stringers, transom, and motor mounts. They are all soaked! My deadline isn't until may though:D

Work has been put off for some time, but time came to get back on track.
Got the glass prepared for stringers and transom.

Damn, that 24 grit wheel on grinder works great!

Most of the glass I was able to pull by finding gap and squeezing flat iron (nail puller) and lifting glass matt off the shell. Weird. Seems like the bond of original mold was poor to any additional glass work, since i was able to lift almost all the matt pieces that way.

Home made tents, for the win!

Sine new engine (5.7) is putting more power than original one(5.0) I decided to widen the transom to cover all stringers. Got the template made from sheetrock since i didnt have cardboard or foam panels handy.
Original transom as I removed the glass ;/

Good idea. Looks like it came out great. (although I don't voluntarily do anything with sheetrock :p)

Re: 19' Maxum Bowrider Project

Transom is in.
Took me a little longer to have it installed due to engineering revisions :)
I've decided to have something temporarily holding back skin of the transom to have uniform thickness. I used 1/2 ply for that. And verified the thickness using caliper. I had to readjust it a bit, by offsetting the rods off the center towards side thats thicker.
I forgot to put plastic sheet between the temp. plywood and outer skin . We'll see how easy it will be to take the piece off...

Overall i used 1.4L of resin, little more of cabosil, and bunch of chopped mat to have transom mated with the hull.

On one of the photos you can see strakes that i had replaced due to original being completely wet. The shape of them was beyond my woodworking skills/equipment to duplicate, so with best i copied the angle to match the hull with excess wood sticking out. Once in place I would cut/sand them down flush.
Since strakes and stringers were removed hull was sitting on the bunks flexing the shell (hate you gravity). I figured if I lift the boat and rest it on its sides and transom edge it would retain its original lines. I used car jack to lift side at a time spacing it enough so its 1/4 off the bunks.

Anyways, here are some photos:

Re: 19' Maxum Bowrider Project

Previous owner didnt take much care for the boat. Thats the price you pay for lack of maintenance.

Here is few updates.

I was able to salvage stringers on one side of the boat. Made template off old I cut fresh stringers. Laterals were in a bad shape so I had to start from scratch.
Once i had the stringers cut and put together i used flat scraps of wood and bolted them to all joints creating solid matrix of stringers.
Since my top stringers were all flat to lay the deck onto, I moved to the bottom of each stringer to conform it to hulls shape. I'd wiggle whole assembly once in a while to see any high spots.
When i wasnt able to rock it anymore, it was time for PL.

DSC_1202.jpg

I had the boat lifted on its side to retain original shape rather than sag on the bunks by its own weight. I let the PL cure over the period of 3 days.
It was time to put engine mounts and start glassing.

For mounts i used 2x4 rather than 4x4, it was cheaper and easier to work with.
