Sorry, Arch, I was not diligent like you in taking pictures during my restoration project, but here is what the finished mounts look like. Still need to clear up stains from wet sanding the blue Gel coat on the top (under transom area was a nice gray) and still need to install carpet. Just glad it is finally usable after 3 years of on again/off again work. Hope this helps.

Nice work, very clean. That is more or less what I was thinking about for my battery and gas tank mounts. Thanks for the pics! Great work!

I spent most of my time on the boat pulling wire, and getting the depth finder hooked up. I still have a few things to hook up on that...but getting close! No speaker boxes, ended up helping my Dad trim a tree....but I think I will be ready for the lake this weekend...or close enough! Hope you guys had a great weekend!

Arch-

Breathtaking! Simply marvellous. Incredible to see how well it turned out, and exciting to see you in the water with it!

Spent my weekend on boats, couldn't be happier!! Just wish I could hit the lottery and boat EVERY DAY!

BTW-My mother went to Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, and guess who she graduated with???? That's right, Miss Morgan Fairchild!!!!!!!! Her real name is Patsy something or another, I think! I asked Mom if they stayed in touch, hoping to get your autograph you talked about. She said no, but actually thinks a former classmate can help?!?! I'll let you know if it works out!! In the meantime, GREAT work and Good Luck!

Wow that is cool! Now that I think about it I don't have any autographs from anyone famous....but getting that one would be a nice touch to top off the project!

Hey arch,
Very nice indeed. I'm glad to see your standards haven't slipped. I really like willamettejeff's idea on the mounting of your ski pole.
The only thing on a boat close to square is two battery's put together.
Miss Morgan looks great.
Take care
Bob

Well I started out the day trying to figure out why my battery puked in the bilge....think that might have had something to do with how I had it tied down...at an angle.

Hey Arch,
I had the same problem this weekend in my boat but I think my trouble was from the rough water. So, when I got back to town I went down to my local parts store and got one of those Omni dry cell batteries. The guy at the parts store absolutly guarranties it will not puke acid again. In fact they can be mounted upside down. Guess time will tell.

I have had one of these for four years so far in my Toyota 4wd PU. Has come completely out of the battery box TWICE, and still kicking like brand new. WELL worth the $$ to me. I knew I'd never sell the truck, that's why I bought it. It is 3-4 times the price of the cheapest Lead Acid battery, though...

Well from what I have read, you aren't supposed to use closed cell or gel batteries with this charging systems. I'm going to stick it in a box this weekend and see what happens.

For some reason I don't see that happening...but if it does I'll clear coat it for sure! I got the bolts for the ski pylon epoxied in...working on speaker boxes now.....I'll post a couple of pics later tonight.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Tonight I worked on mounting the ski pylon. I didn't want to, but I didn't see any choice but to drill the floor. I used the non-adjustable base for a template (hope the adjustable one has the same base ) Then drilled 3/4" holes into the deck. I dug some of the foam out from under the plywood around the holes so the epoxy would have more "bite".

After that I filled the holes with west systems six-10 epoxy and imbeded some stainless lag bolts. I didn't drill the one in the center deep, since I can run a lag screw into the sea cast keel beam. I made a template to keep them aligned...I put packing tape on the back side of the card board....hope that trick works on epoxy, guess we will find out!

I also worked on mounting the depth finder in the dash....wrong size hardware, back to ace!

I built two speaker boxes for 6x9's up under the dash. I should have those carpeted and installed tomorrow. This short week is keeping my busy, I'm headed to the big pond Friday at noon!

Hey arch,
Looks like you are still moving along. Hate that you had to drill the hoes in that nice deck. Like normal it looks like you did a great job. I just wish you could have gotten something under the deck to help distribute the forces over a larger area. However if you opened up a cavity under the deck and filled with epoxy it should hold. Only time will tell.
Great job

I think it will work, as you said we will find out! The directions talk about lag screws into the plywood, this should have a ton more pull out resistance than the lag screws. Most of the forces are going to be shear, which should be fine. I wish I had thought thru it when I was working on the keel, I would have made a sea cast area under the pylon tied into the hull and keel beam....well I will remember that on the next project!

arch,
That would definitely have held up or the boat would be toast. :D
I think you will be fine.

I bet that will be strong enough. I was thinking you could have epoxied down another layer of ply and glassed it over just to beef it up a bit and maybe keep the deck from flexing around the base. If those bolts are plenty long, you could still do that I guess. Just drill the holes and slip it down over the bolts. I dunno, might be a dumb idea, just throwin out ideas.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I have thought about that, but then I end up with the weird thing to carpet around! I'm thinking about putting 4 or 5 layers of glass over it tonight....I know glass doesn't stick to epoxy, but the only thing I'm worried about is pull-out, and the glass should help that.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

It was a long evening in the shop tonight. I started out by hooking up the cylinder head temperature sender, got it today. That little thing is a pain to find.

IMG_0324.jpg

I also covered the speaker boxes in carpet and glued clip angles to the hull to mount them too. After that I hooked up the depth finder and the air temperature sender. I'm going to wait until I figure out the swim platform to put in the water temperature sensor. It was a little bit of a pain, the wires were really small gauge....so I ended up soldering them together. I still need to straiten up the gauges some.

IMG_0321.jpg

I also worked on the ski pylon mounting hardware. I epoxied stainless fender washers over the epoxy plugs I put in last night.

IMG_0320.jpg

After it dried, I ground off the excess epoxy and put a couple of 2 oz layers of mat over the entire assembly. I figure if the thing comes off, part of the floor is going with it!

IMG_0329.jpg

Tomorrow I have a bunch of parts coming in, tilt sender, fuel tank and related hardware, ski pylon (hopefully the correct one this time), rectifier (my mechanic recommended replacing this one given the voltage issue).....So I have to get all that put on tomorrow to be lake ready on Friday (except the fuel tank). I also found an ice chest that will work pretty good. Its a Coleman "stacker", think they just came out with them. Hope everyone is having a good "short week"!
