Hey Arch. I wish I had the time that you have. I only seem to be allowed to work on my boat for about 20 minutes every third or fourth day. As I continue to visit to see some of your pictures, I have to comment on the steering wheel. I just feel like there is a more appropriate wheel for Miss Morgan. There are lots of nice options especially options that Grant offers. Just something I keep noticing.

Donkey, you guys really don't like that steering wheel do you! Well it will get upgrade, but probably next winter. Right now I'm just trying to finish....speaking of spending lots of money, the seats are done! I stopped by the bank today to get the gold bar to pay for them....but it was worth it....I'm just hoping my color selections were right. We should find out tomorrow!

Thanks for the comments on the rub rail. Mick, thanks for the comment...I'm lucky enough to have spent years tinkering with things....learning mostly what not to do! I have learned a lot from this project....now I know what not to do on the next one!

No work on the rub rail tonight, but I did get some work done on the trailer. Mick I thought of you when I figured this out.....I went to lengths to label the fenders and the plywood that attached to them....then during painting I forget to relabel them So when I put them on, I spent 30 minute measure to make sure I got them on correctly.....last night I put the carpet on one of he plywood pieces that was labeled "left".....didn't fit on the left side, but sort of did on the right side  That was when I figured it was quitting time for the night! So tonight I took them off, put them on the correct sides, and mounted the plywood pieces. It was a lot of work to slope the fenders, but I think it paid off.

Tomorrow I hope to pick up the seats, unless its pouring down rain. I really need to spend a night cleaning, took me 20 minutes to find a utility knife tonight, turns out it was where it was supposed to be.....not in one of my piles around Miss Morgan!

Almost forgot, I ordered the depth finder today. Its a basic Faria depth sounder that fits in a 2-1/8" hole....matches the smaller gauges. I did upgrade to the one that has the water temperature and the air temperature pick ups. I think it also has a basic compass...but I'm not sure. Anyhow it will tell me what I need to know and fit in the empty hole in the dash.

Arch- the carpet on the fenders looks great. Puts me a little at ease knowing that if you don't come in straight you have something there that won't allow a big scratch on Miss Morgan.

Speaking of Miss Morgan- are you putting her signature on the boat somewhere?

I agree the carpet really looks good. I nee to purchase some carpet this week, where did you buy it from?

FYI! I have read through ALL the pages of this thread and you have done a awsome job with this project.

MountaineerMiner, glad to hear I can be inspiring, lol! Your project is coming along nicely. I find I work best when I take my time and don't force things....some time off is a good thing!

As always Bob, thanks....your work is excellent. I'm always interested to hear your thoughts.

I thought about her signature briefly but got side tracked Mick, but that sounds like a good idea....hmm need to figure out where to put it.....We could scan it in at the office and have it cut from vinyl..... Hmmm just getting her to sign it would be awesome....don't see that happening unless you have some contacts! I'm sure the carpet will come in handy, there is always some jack bleeeeeeep that doesn't seem to know what no wake means!

thanks SCCA Vette, I'll PM you the place where I bought it.

I'm just glad Miss Morgan wasn't at lake Thunderbird (also know as dirty-bird or thunder-chicken by us locals). Its a small lake south of OKC and east of Norman.

The video makes me want to store Miss Morgan and Max in my cellar!

Speaking of lake thunderbird, I was thinkin that might be a good place to look for my next project. There are surely some totaled boats over there that are salvageable and the owners might just let a guy haul em off after they collect their insurance money. What do ya think.

Maybe, but most of those look like they are toast. You never know till you look....the news guys always take photos of the worst stuff. Maybe there are some that didn't get it as bad. I'd still plan on a total rebuild if they were swamped. Amazing what a small tornado can do....I'd hate to see what the "May 3rd F5" would have done. I'm guessing you would have to go to the next county to find where the marina landed.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I watched the video of the tornado, and I believe I saw two seperate tornados twisting with each other. When I saw the damage to the marina I was shocked. I doubt any of those boats will be worth anything again. They will probably secured by the insurance co. and then auctioned off as parts boats.

Now that I have said all of that, get back to work on the boat. I believe we are all drooling to see her dressed and ready for the dance.

Hey Arch,

Can't wait to see pics of the red rocket on the lake. If you tell Miss Morgan that you've got a 15ft red rocket named after her, I'm sure she'd come and give it a kiss on the bow! :D

Nice job on the Rub Rail Arch! super quality as per norm with you!

Im not sure if Shifes quote is correct...on How its made (discovery) Ive watched them make Stainless...it is basically steel with 18% chrome added in the melting pot...chrome is infused throughout it.....so the stainless DOESNT have a coating ...it is through and through stainless....the heating may have tempered it and made it more malleable...if you are worried a light coat of matte or gloss clear will make sure no water rusts it up...personally I wouldn't worry about it.......

now if you sanded a chrome bumper I would woprry about rust lol as it is .0003 thick chrome coating over nickel

as for phospahates in the stainless...actually the Chromium DOES rust...or age ate...but at a MUCH slower rate than regular steel AND it "rusts" clear...unlike conventional steel which rusts red

Looks great!

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you need to re-passivate that stainless where you heated and polished it. Polishing and heating stainless like that removes the protective phosphates that make stainless,.... stainless. Without that protective film it will stain, rust, and corrode.

Wichard makes a very effective product for this:

We use it on the racing sailboats to protect expensive quick release shackles.

Vegas, gonna bust out the MechE dork in me..

Passivating SS actually removes the carbon from the steel, leaving a highly chromium rich surface layer. The removal of the carbon in this outer layer makes it even more resistant to corrsion than the base metal.

In any case I wish I had as much room and time for projects as you! Great stuff in your thread!

Arch, that is an amazing looking combo! Can't wait for pics of it flying over the lake!

Thanks guys. I think the effects of heating varies with the alloy of the stainless. Well got the seats today, ran home and put one of them in to see what it looked like. I can't wait to get the carpet in!

Under normal use/wear stainless requires little maintenance. However, the amount of sanding and polishing that Arch needed to restore the shine will result in rust stains unless the surface is re-passivated. While the concern is greater in salt water, I race primarily in fresh water and I can tell you first hand that stainless that has been sanded and polished WILL stain unless it is re-passivated.

Properties

High oxidation-resistance in air at ambient temperature are normally achieved with additions of a minimum of 13% (by weight) chromium, and up to 26% is used for harsh environments.[9] The chromium forms a passivation layer of chromium(III) oxide (Cr2O3) when exposed to oxygen. The layer is too thin to be visible, and the metal remains lustrous. The layer is impervious to water and air, protecting the metal beneath. Also, this layer quickly reforms when the surface is scratched. This phenomenon is called passivation and is seen in other metals, such as aluminium and titanium. Corrosion-resistance can be adversely affected if the component is used in a non-oxygenated environment, a typical example being underwater keel bolts buried in timber.

Arch let me first start off by appoligizing to you. I was of the impression that you were going to put a "bench type seat" in front of the "motor well", that was the reason for me trying to persuade you to go the fuel tank route under the front deck as opposed to under the "splash well". Are there any plans for something to go in front of the space below the "splash well" to hide the "bilge area" (battery, electronics etc. etc.)
The back to back buckets look nice, not too overpowering!

Right now the area under the splash well only has the battery. I originally had planned on having two 6 gallon tanks back there. I just like the idea of the fixed tank. Having a little more gas would be nice on a lake the size of the one I hang out on.

Hey arch Have I got a deal for you. Just cause I know you are almost done and the rebuild bug will have you jonesin in no time I will graciously trade you my slightly bigger boat/motor for Miss Morgan and Max. After all I would hate to have you get bored. And what would will we all do once you are done for entertainment? The boats are nearly identical so it should be an easy transition for you. Ill even throw in the ski pylon. Just looking out for you and all the members here.....;):D
