What do you mean it is almost lake time? It's lake time already, of course I wont be skiing without a wetsuit right now. Dropped the boat in Lake Overholser for a test run last weekend. That water is still cold as ice. I hope to be on Dirtybird come Sunday, if the rain holds off. Hurry up and get that boat done, I am dying to see it finished and at the lake.

Well West Marine called and my rub rail is in.....so I have to head up to T-town to pick it up this weekend. Tonight I moved Max from my garage to the shop. I know how sentimental you guys are.....so I thought I would post a picture of the young couple!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks for the offer woodonglass, but I'm heading that way anyhow. I'm going to visit my Grandma in Cushing, then hit T-town...from there I'm going south to Eufalua. I also have a couple of things to return that I have ordered online....and I need to quiz them about this gas tank and get it ordered. Sounds like we need to have a Texas / Ok I-boats meet up this summer! I should be ready......um sometime! I predict the rub rail and Max go on Monday night.....David K is chopping at the bit to help me with that part. I'm ready....all the itching will be worth that sight!

Arch is the gas tank a portable type,(not built in structurely),how many gallons. If built in how do you go about filling it up? Are you not concerned about the added weight at the back of the boat!

Good news the steering came in today and looks to be the right lenght! I got home late tonight.....and had to pack for my lake trip tomorrow, but I still got it put in.

Bailey, the tank is a permanent tank...as for filling it will have a thru hull filler. That was a big challenge, finding one with the filler in the right place. Tonight I figured out that west marine's picture is of the wrong tank....and the filler is in the middle not the end. I'm not really liking where it will fall in the boat, so I'm back to square one.

As for the tank in the back, who really knows till you try it? Every boat is different, and this one seems to have been set up for removable tanks in the back. I can't find anything that would indicate it had a built in tank. David K's Infinity that was similar had a rear tank, also all the outboard I have owned had rear tanks. That being said the front tank might be the way to go, just depends on how the boat handles. I was planning on having her mostly together before sea trials, but I'm thinking of just getting Max on, the seats then put her in the water with a removable tank. I was thinking tonight I could take a couple of sand bags that I could simulate the weight of the fuel with....move them around and see how she handles. What do you guys think? The tank location will have an impact on where I put carpet and where I don't, so I would like to figure that out before the carpet goes in.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend, I'm headed to pick up the rub rail in the AM.....then spend the day at the lake doing spring chores!

Instrument panel and steering wheel look good together.

Arch love the gauges. My tank is up front. Never ran the boat before restore but the P.O. said she would stand straight up on take off. The weight in the back would have made it much worse but they are different boats. And I dont think he knew what trim was. I like the dash but IMHO the steering wheel seems a bit ordinary, but to each his own.

when using your sandbags to simulate weight...keep thiese numbers in mind....

The weight of gasoline is dependent on the temperature, altitude, and it also depends on how much alcohol/additives has been added. Today, that's sometimes a lot. So we come up with
1 gallon of water equals 8.33 lbs.
1 gallon of gasoline equals 5.8 to 6.5 lbs.
1 gallon of ethanol equals 6.59 lbs.

the common weight used for calculations are 6.25#/gallon

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks for the ideas guys. The steering wheel is more of a temporary thing....everything I found I liked was $100+....so I elected to go with something simple and focus on getting her in the water. I'm so far over budget it isn't funny! Hopefully later I will have the $$ to upgrade that and a few other items. mrdjflores, Mercury say NO alcohol for older motors like Max, so I can take that out of the equation. I hate that stuff and avoid it like the plague. I figured out when gas was really high, that it actually cost me more to buy gas with that stuff in it. It was cheaper per gallon, but my mileage would go to hell! With the tanks I'm looking at we are talking about a little over 100#'s.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Arch the reason I was asking about the size of tank was because of the weight. Your boat is 15' according to your posts, you have made you own seats (fronts and backs) that might be a bit of "over kill". From your pictures the bow is quite long, you have a "splash well" that looks about average in size,so I'm guessing you have about 6' of area for your seating arrangements. Now stop and think, you"ll have the motor weight, battery, full gas tank probably, plus the dead weight of the back seats. I'd venture to say that your boat when floating in the water will be stern "heavy" (it'll look awesome). Add to this scenerio someone getting into the boat without stepping on any of the seats, your buddies climbing into the boat after after taking a tumble while skiing,I forgot you mentioned something about adding some sort of "fixed" boarding device on the transom. You replaced the old transom(seacast method) do you think that you saved any weight doing it this way over a wooden transom? I really think that with everything that you've done with precession and care that your boat is going to be "*** heavy"Also remember you want to water ski which means fairly quick accerationno problem with "Big Max" other than your boat will be pointing skywards until it gets on plane, If you needto stop quickly I hope you don't get swampped by your own wake! Please think real hard and long over the gas tank issue!

Thanks for the thoughts Bailey, I like having someone present the other side of the "ball"! If you need a job in architecture let me know, I respect people who can tell me I'm wrong! I'm starting to lean towards the tank in the front. I guess once I have her in the water we will have some direction. I did get the rub rail picked up..hopefully we can get it on tomorrow night or maybe Tuesday night. I'm really worried about bending it around the corners on the stern....guess we'll see:eek: The lake was great by the way....Ahhh...Miss Morgan is going to love this playground!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Arch I don't know if your giving me a "shot" or not. you have spent a lot of time, effort and probably a "boat load" of money. I am only speaking from my experience. 18' ski boat,140 hp omc o/b speed 58mph (GPS) It has a portable ski tripod. Normally this boat will get up on plane in a blink of an eye. (boat is a similar to the old fashion "beisemeyer" drag boat) it"s bottom is completly flat with a 18" fin inbedded in its bottom. The boat produces a very small "wake" hence its best used for pulling skiers (it pounds your kidneys if the water is is even a little rough). With regards to pulling skiers and with using a "tripod" we have found that it scares the "you know what" out of them when trying to accelerate enough to get them out of the water (or should I say their "rearends") It seems that the boat's bow goes skyward dueto the fact that the stress on the tripod seems to cause the boats forward motion to "pivot" upwards not forward, and thats with no extra weight other the seats at the rear of the boat. There is no issues with the trimming or prop, its the nature of the beast.
