Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Thanks, I have spent a lot of time pondering the back seats and the ice chest the last few days. Today was my birthday, so I was busy with B-day stuff. I did manage to pick up another ice chest, 25qt Igloo marine.....too small....I had the 54qt too big......naturally the 36qt, which might be the right size was sold out! The more I have thought about it, I would like to find one that would work and could be upholstered.....I just see the custom one taking a lot away from my budget and schedule....sounds like a fun project, but I want to be on the water in just about 5 months! I'm headed out to my friend David K's place for New Years festivities tomorrow....so it will be Saturday before I get back to the boat. I will try to get some picks of the boat he restored....plan on comparing notes with him. I have also been enlisted to help him install a motor in one of his 4x4 projects....free beer = free labor, lol! By the way has anyone upholstered and ice chest? I was pondering how that could be done.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

you could build a thin wooden box to surround the cooler sides so staples have something to bite into, or use adhesive to retain foam, then vinyl over the foam?

Happy Birthday!

Happy belated birthday! I'm thinking for the beer cooler build something/a frame out of wood were you have the ability to put on or take out a big rectangular plastic or aluminum bin. And then cover it in fiberglass and put a lid on it. Maybe you can even incorporate some of the wood from your property for the lid.
Happy New Year!

Happy late birthday and holidays for that matter. I'm not sure it would be that much more to build a cooler but another possibility is to build a "box' that you drop a cooler into. Just build the console, put braces or a platform for the cooler to sit on then cut a hole in the top the shape for the top of the cooler to stick up thru.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I hope everyone had a great new year! I did, I went out east to my friend David k's place at Lake Tinkiller. It?s about 30 minutes east of my place at Lake Eufaula. We are lucky to have so many lakes in the eastern part of the state, most manmade. I'm not sure if it is still the record, but at one time we had the largest concentration of manmade lakes. Regardless I headed out yesterday morning to help David with one of his projects.....he needed help putting a VW turbo diesel in a Suzuki Samara.....how he comes up with these things I have no clue! After a little wrestling, we got it in....fit like a glove! Afterwards they had a big party for New Years......I won't go into detail about the ice sculpture that was used to do shots!......lake people!

Here is a shot of Maxine, the boat he restored....it looked about like mine when he started! Very cool little boat.

On the way back, I stopped by my place at Eufaula to check on things. Everything was cool, which I figured it was since I hadn't heard from the neighbors. Here is a picture of my dock....I built and installed it (other than the piers) myself a few years ago.....lots of time cutting, fitting, welding...about 6 tons of steel.

IMG_2821.jpg

Here is a shot of the lake....no wind, 45.....what I would have given to be zipping across it......ok so maybe it might be a bit nippy, but just look at the "glass" like water! There is a reason in the song "Oklahoma" when they talk about the winds sweeping down the plains! We don't get too many days where the water is this flat!

As for the cooler, I have settled on a 36qt igloo marine cooler....the only problem is that is the ONLY size I can?t find in stock locally..... I spent a couple of hours looking tonight. So I spent the rest of the evening sucking up the 100 pounds of bondo dust from the fender project and striating stuff up. While I was doing that I of course came up with a list of stuff I need....so the plan is to round that stuff up in the AM, then work on the boat. I hope to make some progress on the trailer wiring or mocking up the seats.....I down loaded the cooler dimensions.

archbuilder,
Nice looking lake and dock.
How many man hours did that take you? ;)
You friend has a sweet little boat and shop.
It needs a little fiberglass dust spread around in it. :D
Glad you had a good New Year too.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Hey Mick, I'm not sure if you can use awsome that many times in one sentence...lol!

Bob I didn't keep track, but I would say 600 or 700 hours on the dock. I welded every night and weekend for a couple months...then had to haul it up to T-town for galvanizing, then to the lake. Ever try moving around heavy steel objects in sand? Great exercise....I used the hell out of my tractor on that project!

I think it makes David K nervous when he comes over and sees my dust covered shop with tools everywhere!

Speaking of shops, I need to run down there and get my shopping list!

archbuilder,
I love that boat! I'm a sucker for old stuff. I guess that meaans I'm getting old too.:D Nice dock too, I'm envious.

Glad to see you're enjoying the 45 degree weather. I can send you some 15 degree weather if you want it.

The snow that we got on the 18th is still on the ground.

Seeing that lake really gives the motivation to get this boat done.

You can keep the cold weather....supposed to get cold again starting tomorrow.....I still have 2' tall snow drifts that I would love to send you!

Yeah looking at the lake made me antsy.....I wish I could have found the cooler locally, but I did order it today.

So what's going on with the interior seating and cooler ideas? Use the KISS Method- Keep It Simple Stupid

I'm going out soon to see if I can figure out the skin thing and glass the rest of the hull
good luck

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Words of wisdom Mick! I have made a couple of decisions...wire management on the trailer will have to be plastic clips or something I do on the next project!

I fiddled all day with the cooler, its now an accessory...no built in cooler! I decided that Bruce Nescher didn't want one in this boat, otherwise he would have built one in! I will work on the mock up of the seats tomorrow when I have a fresh perspective....and some rest!

I did get the first coat of primer on the fenders....I don't see getting another on for a while, the high on Thursday is 18......its down hill from here!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Hey archbuilder,
I think this weather is getting the best of all of us. The only thing I did outside today was drove to town to get the tires rotated on the truck.
I think the high was in the low 20's. :(
I didn't have much drive to work on anything outside. Not even the cover for the boat so I could heat it.
Just to cold for me. My wife says I'm getting wimpy.
Maybe she is right.
Take care my friend.
