    New old boat checklist.

Clear all the way down to the lower unit. It was only throwing a light mist and steam before but impeller also still looked good. Previous owner discounted it quite a bit and I didn’t think anything of it and simply ordered a new OEM kit.. I would invest more time and $$ into it if it were in...

    New old boat checklist.

You’re probably right. It’s been a year since I’ve seen them as they are sitting in my other boat in storage

    New old boat checklist.

I think what I have is 3/4” which is what is on the boat.

    New old boat checklist.

I forgot to update this after first outing. Obviously knowing it’s an ‘89 it had a high probability of breaking down first time out.. and it did. The 9.9 Yamaha starts hard, smokes and doesn’t pee correctly even with a new impeller ( spits and spurts ) It runs fine but with all the work it...

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

I’m going to go for it. I really wanted another 4 stroke FI Suzuki but it’s not in the cards this year with the boat purchase and it may not be next year so this should plug and play onto my controls and away I’ll go. Hang onto the old motor for parts

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

The one I have just has many signs of being a worn out high hour motor when you look close. I missed it when I bought it truthfully as once running it does run good. I don’t have time to go through it myself and the local marine repair shop would figure $600 to go through it, and then you factor...

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

Is $1k a fair price for one of these motors as a low hour pretty minty and mint running one?

2012 F150 3.5 EB turbo(2) oil change, low miles on oil

The oil needs to get up to operating temp and hold there for twice that time to burn the moisture off.. anything less is short trip/ severe service interval which in your case is every 12 months. Oil can become acidic with the extra moisture.

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

The only thing I can think of on the cheap is that if it is condemned, I have a 1986ish Johnson 20hp w/ remote control that I bought for a chugger boat project. It’ll probably need a carb clean and an impeller but it was a solid runner. It’s been on a stand in dry storage since about 2019.

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

I would tend to agree 100%. I keep the boat at a storage facility since my yard is a postage stamp.. I can trailer it to my FIL’s for work but I also work full time leaving only weekends and summer is only so long. Paying for a diag may be cheap in the long run

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

I guess it might make sense that it’s been cooked as the rings could be hurt and still run well enough. I don’t have high hopes I guess. I may drop it off at a local shop for a damage report but I won’t be going into any powerhead work. Not worth it

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

Not sure as I haven’t checked it. I really don’t think it’s down on compression as it does actually run fine and has plenty of power. I just don’t know the break point of where it makes sense to repair vs replace. I’d have no problem putting a brand new DF9.9A on the boat vs replacement if it...

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

Literally cover the carb with my hand for a second and it pops off. I know it’s a primer system. I suspect it’s not working. As for the telltale. It dribbles and spits. It’s not overheating but I know it’s not right either. Also throws a bit of blue smoke at startup which is what makes me...

    Yamaha 9.9 troubles

My new boat ( 1989 Sylvan offshore ) came with a 2002 Yamaha 9.9 ( T9.9 ELRA high thrust ). Couple issues. It is pumping water but not as good as it should. I put a new pump in it and the pump impeller that was in it was good. The passage is clear. Also it won’t start unless it’s manually choked...

My carb is obsolete.. Please help me repair/replace!

Boats dot net has it in stock part number 8153. I assume it’s probably pretty easy to get one if they have it. But if you want to. Any gaskets you might need can be made out of gasket paper pretty easily

No dipstick on 1989 era 3.0L?

Most of the marine motors I’ve been around in my life has been either 2.5 or 3.0L or straight 6. I have tons of 3.0L Alpha one gen 1 parts since I’ve torn apart 2 parts boats. It’s why when this boat came up and I knew what it was I bought it ( as well as it’s just a really nice boat )

No dipstick on 1989 era 3.0L?

Yup. I just couldn’t remember what it was. 4x4 trucks with a 90* adapter take a different filter though

No dipstick on 1989 era 3.0L?

I actually had to look up the oil filter for a ‘65 Chevy II so that I got the right filter since the marine section is no more. as for why I’m doing this vs going to a dealership. Trying to get the boat in the water this weekend and boat shops with a retail store are very out of the way.

No dipstick on 1989 era 3.0L?

I grabbed 15W40 Rotella T4. My local Walmart got rid of all the marine section in automative. Sporting goods section has the Penzoil and Startron gear lube.
