    Starter not engaging

Even if the connection looks good moisture can cause it to increase its resistance. The starter gets its ground from the mounting bracket.

    Starter not engaging

Weak battery, or, corrosion on some of the wires; check the negative battery lead [this is the common point] and grounds. The battery should stay around 10v while cranking and 12+v when not. A sketchy battery will drop voltage from sitting - that's why I have a voltmeter in my instrument combo...

If you are going to remove the lower pump body check for a screw on the side, above the cav plate marked FLUSH this must be removed before you can take out the body if there isn't one (only 2 screws) go ahead ; once you have it out you can see which seal it uses; there might be an O-ring on the...

That shaft looks OK to me just grungy and that rubber grommet cushions the reverse lock mech - you can pull it out if you hold the SS down at the same time - after you've blasted. On page 39 of your manual you will see the propshaft assembly; the spring is part 39 in this manual page it...

Dry-ice blasting is a form of carbon dioxide cleaning, where dry ice, the solid form of carbon dioxide, is accelerated in a pressurized air stream and directed at a surface in order to clean it. It vaporizes leaving no residue like sand but it's expensive to operate.

Don't pull out the shaft it goes into a cam that's spring loaded inside and can be difficult to re-install (post Nr.73) - can you post a pic so we can see the condition.? What are you blasting with dry ice would be the best; sand not so good, I would put the water pump housing back on to insure...

    1962 Merc 450 restoration ..

Replace the cup and all the gaskets; to take out the impeller use 2 screwdrivers 180* apart and pry up. You don't need to undo the screw at the end of the driveshaft but I would remove the rust on the DS; lay it down and use fine sandpaper along the length, keeping it away from the waterpump.

Replace the waterpump impeller and gaskets and install the lower unit (follow these instructions; grease the sides of the driveshaft and shiftshaft splines) Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a few more...

Late 70’s Mercury 20 Hp manual

    1989 Mercury Classic 50 Plug Wire ?

It's crimped on to the wire and should come out with it. Don't know if a new wire comes with one.

    1989 Mercury Classic 50 Plug Wire ?

The distributor models had the wires screwed into the cap but the coil end was pushed into it and had a clip for extra security. If the wire has a rubber boot on the coil pull it off first, check the end and look for a brass clip, then use pliers to lever the wire out. WD40 can help make the...

Swapping Short and Long Shafts between outboards

Yes they will be different lengths but the waterpipe, exhaust tube and shift shaft will all end on the same plane (ie. distance from the casting bottom) whether it's a long or short shaft, only the driveshaft will be longer or shorter. This is only speculation - I'm thinking about the cheapest...

Swapping Short and Long Shafts between outboards

I'm thinking that you just have to changed the driveshafts as long as the splines are the same.

    Over charging

Also, deep cycle batteries are not recommended for the motor either, you just need a regular Marine starting battery, the alternator is for keeping the battery "topped up". The 6th wire is probably for grounding.

    1984 50hp Merc Overheating

Could be you're trimming it out too far or the motor is sitting too high on the transom or both - "Is it a long shaft motor on a 20" transom" is a good question. I am not a fan of those "Whale Tails" they can cause handling problems and might be the reason for your problem. When you're underway...

    Over charging

Don't use a maintenance free or an AGM battery with this system the electrolyte will boil away quickly. However if you want to install a regulator....... here are the parts; you should be able to buy the regulator at your local Mercury dealer.

    1962 Merc 450 restoration ..

If you want to restore it all the way find a parts motor (1960 to 1964) that's seized or whatever and add the good parts, I have a Mark 58 [1958 year] and it uses the same choke parts etc.
