    First you have to wire it correctly - the wires are color coded red to red terminal etc. Have you opened the ignition driver to see if the rotor and cap are in good condition? You unbolt it from its adapter and remove it.

    The switchbox you have now is used with the Lightning energizer which generates the power to activate the box, the other type uses 12v to generate the spark and a trigger system to fire the coil. They are not the same.

    Try this site they do nothing but very old Mercs http://johnsoldmercurysite.com/phpBB3/index.php. I think the motor needs a complete tear down, there are needle and ball bearings inside that could be damaged not to mention the piston rings. You want a motor that will be reliable!

    They put "pee holes" on the port side of the motor (left, looking from the back) yours might be clogged with sand, look at the bottom of the top cowling for the hole and push some wire into it to see if it is clear.
