    Throttle link too long?

This has always bothered me about my 1988 100 hp 2+2 motor. I have the throttle cable barrel all the way to the end to get the mark on the throttle cam to line up with the roller. This makes it really hard to get a full range of throttle. Could it be the early motors had a mistake?

    Mystery hole

I'm working on a older Mercury model 110 9.8 hp. I think it's about a year 1972 model? Any way, there is this small hole as indicated in the pics. It seems to have come this way. It is a hole directly to the exhaust passage. When I first saw it I thought it might be a puncture hole damage...

    Tach reading maxes out

The tach reads fine till I get to about 4500 then it won't read any higher. I can tell the engine is getting to full rpm (about 5400) by the sound and the speedometer. Do tachs go out this way? Can their windings or movement get sticky? I'm hoping the problem is in the tach itself and not a...

Tower of Power or Tower of Problems?

Since I have been reading this forum it has occurred to me that there is an inordinate amount of posts about problems with the '80s inline 6 cylinder Mercs. Up till recently I always considered the ToP to be a well respected motor. Now it seems they all have common modes of failure. I once...

    Stereo and battery question

Replacing an old stereo with a newer computerized type that has presets and settings. What's the best method (cheapest and easiest) of keeping the settings in the stereo? Should I install an additional small battery with the unit on the yellow wire?

    Tilt/trim leaks down overnight

If I do not support the motor with something and I have it tilted up, the next morning it has moved down by itself. I'm assuming it means a leaking seal in the hydraulic piston. Is this what it is or is it a leaky valve? Is this common? What can be done? Can I run some stopleak fluid in it?

Question re lower unit drain plug

I'm changing the lower unit oil. The small magnet that sticks out of the plug and into the oil is loose. Is this normal? I noticed when I pulled the drain plug out and went to wipe the tiny metal specs off it the magnet came right out. It could be normal. It's just that I never tried to...

    Where do these parts go?

I'm replacing the water pump impeller on my '88 100hp Mercury. The kit made by Sierra came with these parts. Where do the O-rings go? What numbers are they on this parts diagram?

    Water pump advise please

It has been some time since I replaced the water pump on my '88 100hp Mercury outboard. I have to admit that as we get older we don't boat as much as before. Only go out maybe 5 times a year. Maybe one 3 day camping trip? Any way, with another boating/camping season ahead I decided to get...
