Thanks Scott. Yes, that's a big concern of mine also. I want to make sure it's appropriately rated and I want it to stay put!

Mercruiser Alpha 1 - backfired and died out on the water ( Its electrical 100% ) - need basic troubleshooting steps,, how do i check charging system?

I would pressure test the coolant system and make sure your not ingesting water. Could explain the slow crank and could have bent a pushrod or other damage. These motors are well known for it. Then ****-can that 40 year old voltage regulator and install an alternator conversion kit. My opinion

Lol. I wasnt looking for stereo suggestions, I dont even have A radio, never mind a louder one. As for the earplug suggestion.... I suppose I could just bring my ex wife to drown it out

    Sound deadening

Its louder than I would like... I installed some in my old 340 Challenger but can't recall what it was. The more I research, I see they recommend having a nailer for overhead applications. Not going to do that. I assume the heat eventually wins over the adhesive.

    IR Laser Thermometer

I use a Milwaukee at work (about $90.00). It works just fine and is pretty bullet proof. I also have a Ryobi that is about 1/ the money. It also works fine, but definately not as robust. I wouldnt trust it bouncing around in a tool box on a boat. Both from Home Depot

Yes a Google search comes up with quite a bit, even west marine carries some. I'm just wondering if anyone has installed any certain brand and has been happy with it before I just give it my best guess. Thanks

    Sound deadening

Good morning. What are you all using for sound deadening material under the doghouse? Motor is fairly close, so a bit of heat. In a perfect world, something self adhesive would be great, but I don't want it to continually fall off. Anyone use a product they are happy with? Thanks Dave

    MCM 3.7 / 190 Starter

Yes, thank you. I was trying to avoid that until I had the new one. Didn't want to do it twice. Was able to re-thread the shaft without removing. Now I can pull and replace when I'm ready. Dave

Thanks. I like a nice neat engine compartment. Motor is a complete rebuild top to bottom. That alt kit came from Breezeworks and is far superior to the Chinese garbage I had in there. Nice neat application. They can't be too difficult to rebuild, I've just never done one.(yet) lol

    MCM 3.7 / 190 Starter

FYI; MacGyver'd it. I ran a die over the lug and re-threaded from 3/8 to 5/16". It will keep me on the water till the new starter arrives! And added the new alternator kit

    MCM 3.7 / 190 Starter

I ordered a new starter. I will bench and attempt to rebuild the old one when I have more time, and have for a spare. If nothing else, it will be a good experience
