    Did you ever wonder?

What bugs me the most is when they get correct info, they get smart and say that it's wrong. Cut you down and call you stupid along with other good advice. At that point i walk away....

How big of a problem do I have?

Had that happen. I used my borescope and found the pieces, at the same time I put a small grabber in there and could see where to grab them. got the pieces out.

    Duel battery troubleshooting

So are you saying that advice you get here is useless?

    Duel battery troubleshooting

Ya, I’d say replace both of them at the same time. That way you know where you are at with it. those meters,,,,, been there before myself. I just don’t make it public ! Lol

    3.0 Mercruiser

Agreed with the above, also if there is debris in the tank it can plug the anti siphon valve, and some have a screen on the end of the pickup tube. Doesn’t hurt to check those out while you are there. Edit to add, do you actually check for spark when it quits? New components can be bad out of...

    3.0 Mercruiser

The anti syphon valve is located at the fuel line, on the tank pickup. The fuel line hooks right to it. If you remove it, and its clear/clean you can re-use it. I'd replace it myself. Did you check for spark right after it quits?

Just a fun day at the range, I hadn’t been in a few years. I’ll never make that mistake again.

Our outdoor range is about 10 miles away. Volunteer payment of five dollars. For $25.00 you get into the sportsman club membership. You can volunteer for helping maintain it or just use it all you want. I go there twice a year so I just do the five bucks at a time. The club maintains the...

Cheapest, easiest, fastest way to paint a crappy fiberglass boat?

I took my 1977 pontoon and removed all the yellow panel, sanded and re-painted with paint and tractor paint with the hardener. I don’t have pictures at the moment but tomorrow I will from my other computer. Still looks good after five years. Wax every spring and fall. About $50 total. I know...

Cheapest, easiest, fastest way to paint a crappy fiberglass boat?

I call my spare boat the beater boat. Don’t really care if it gets banged up. As far as paint I’m no help.

Off-Season Float Battery Charging, 2 Batteries

That's how I roll. Charge in the fall fully, disconnect, and go to bed. Chage in the spring and go boating. If the battery is shot in the spring it's time for new. I get a minimum of 8 years on batterys, at that point i get nervous and replace them.

    Transom straps

Overkill is a good thing! I remember back in the 70’s, a double wide snowmobile trailer was crashed about 1/2 mile from the house. The trailer hitch broke and the owner was there, he said the trailer was end for ending down the highway, landed in the snowbanks. Sleds didn’t have a scratch! He...

Off-Season Float Battery Charging, 2 Batteries

I simply make sure the battery's are charged and disconnect them. Top off in spring and go boating. It get's to -20 up here and I haven't had any issues.

What to do with Penta SX grease tube when installing Sealed Bearing

Most new gimble bearings are not greaseable. The kit comes with a plug, you take out the grease fitting and install the plug. I've never seen a tube corrode and fail but then again, I've only worked on freshwater boats.

    MR outdrive

A little heat doesn't hurt, not red hot. But in this case the pivot bolts are not threaded. They are held in place with what I call an aluminum "nail".

    Looking at 8hp and 15hp 4stroke Merc

Trolling with the main engine isn't the best way to go. We've had a few that come in with shifting/running issues. Turns out the owners troll with them, turn down the idle and putz along. It carbon's up the plugs/cylinders and makes them run poorly. The one's that give them a good wot throttle...

    MR outdrive

I usually bend the pin in the back straight, tap it fwd a as much as you can and grab the head with a side cutter and pry them out. A proper stainless cotter pin works to put it back together, there is really not much stress on those pins.

    coupler repair question

Had my coupler break similar to that. Turned out the previous owner had bent it and straightened it before I bought it. Yup, the boat fell off the hitch ball and the tounge slid under the truck. Lucky I was going downhill in town, slowly. Another mile and I would have been on the highway...
