1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

I put a straight edge across the cavitation plate. It sits about 1" above the keel. Based on that, the top hole appears be the better choice. Additionally, the original Evinrude owner manual (not specific to SC boats) also depicts the top hole being used and seems to refer to it as the "primary...

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

Outboard is back on. Not sure why, but for some reason I expected the upper portion of the mount to sit directly on the transom. This is clearly not the case, nor was was it ever that way. The upper mounts bolts are secured through the 2nd hole from the top. I tried doing some searching through...

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

@classiccat @SHSU and @dingbat had a healthy discussion concerning 5200 applications in posts #70-77 of my build. Have a look if you'd like. https://forums.iboats.com/threads/1975-starcraft-ss-16-freshen-up.718360/page-4

    1976 22' SUS O/B "Hydration Break"

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you're in the one of the best parts of the job - getting rid of all the nastiness hiding throughout the boat. Enjoy the project

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

Both coats of paint are on. Turned out fairly well even with my all-Harbor Freight spray setup. If this holds up well throughout the Summer, I'll plan to shoot the entire exterior in this color between the seasons. The Rust-Oleum can surprisingly says it can be used down to 32 F. On side note...

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

I had a similar debate 2 years ago when I ordered my seats. Actually ended up ordering both colors from Jeff Bezos & Co (free returns) to see how they looked in the boat. Everyone at home and on the forum said "go white" so I returned the blue and went all white. Personally, I was 51% pro-blue...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I'd highly recommend this. My SS16 has very minimal leakage when light cruising etc, however I can easily build up several gallons in the bilge (if the pump's off) when running hard. I suspect this water intrusion is coming from the seam along the chine area. I used the vast majority of my...

Coming along fast now! Looks great on the redone trailer.

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

I ended up purchasing a bag of 100 1/4" closed end rivets with a .062-.25 grip range. It was about 96 more than I needed (all other holes were 3/16") but that's how it goes. Just glad that I managed to find them. Very few 1/4" rivets have that shallow of a grip range. All the rivets/transom...

Anyone own a big hardtop Chief?

I feel like a boat that size with that much space dedicated to relaxing/comfort (sleeping/lounge area, eat-in booth, etc) is really lacking w/o a head of some sort. That being said, it is a super-cool retro piece.

    1972 Starcraft Nova

Myself, and many others, have used Old Timer's Formula on our decks, transoms, etc. Pretty much what you're already doing except with a coat of straight varnish to finish it off. The image below is all over iboats.

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

There is definite truth to that. When my SS16 is out for an easygoing cruise, I get almost no water in the bilge. When running hard, I get a rather significant amount bilge water if the pump is left off. I assume this is coming in along chine area when the hull stressed. Not really sure if...

    Hello all, new here.

I'll second @Moserkr on keeping the Green. It's only original once. Very cool that all the period-correct electronics are still in place. That being said, it's yours to enjoy. No shame in modifying to fit your vision

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

The transom wood got three good coats of OTF just in time for the Midwest to drop into a deep freeze for most of February. Hopefully, 50-60 degree temps will allow for a coat or two or Spar in the not-so-distant future. In the meantime, it's probably best for me to focus on the aluminum portions...

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

I applied the OTF on Saturday afternoon, taking @classiccat's advice and warming the wood and OTF to room temperature in the house before applying in the garage. I did manage to apply it during the 37(F) degree heat of the day . I plan to wait 7-10 days before applying the Spar Urethane...

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

That was a good bit of education on 5200. It's comforting to remember just how many advances have been made in sealants, gaskets, adhesives and lubricants since these boats were built. It'd be very hard, regardless of the substance used, to not make a significant improvement over the factory...

1975 Starcraft SS 16' Freshen Up

Seeing as the Midwest boating season is over, I opted to put the trailer project on hold until next Spring when the weather will be better suited to trial-and-error test fits at the boat ramp. In the mean time, the motor and transom were removed for what appeared to be the first time since 1975...

Aside from the floor covering (atrocious) the current color scheme really doesn't look too bad! Can't blame you for wanting blue/white though. Welcome!

I like that your keeping the original vinyl in place. No sense in the added time and cost if you're happy with with the function and appearance.
