    While in neutral, yes. I would recheck your connection, keeper in, keeper nuts are properly set. If they check out, once again, did the shaft that was in your gearcase when you pulled it for the impeller replacement, get turned or removed? If so, that's your problem.

    Not sure what you did, but there is normally no reason to pull the shift shaft for most of the seals. When I remove by accident, I loosen the two screws holding the carrier together and pull it out a 1/4 inch or so then push the shift shaft in. Once I know its in where it needs to be, I tighten...

    Not sure you can install it wrong really. Did you turn the shift shaft stub that comes out of the gearcase maybe? Is this tiller or a remote motor?

    Agreed, less worrying and more diagnostics. Just compression as it lays will give you a general idea. Stop running this motor and determine if this is a lean running issue like I believe you already know.

    Now it's time to figure out whether it's spark or fuel. Personally, is get rid of those plugs and buy champions but others will disagree. Either way I'd start by doing a spark JUMP test and if tests fine go on to fuel.

    Standard lead acid battery, group 24 should be fine or step up to a G 27. Don't start it with an old impeller, it may fail and get rubber bits up in the cooling passages.

    Or, since water doesn't go through it, the gasket insulates it from the hotter aluminum. Two ways to look at it.

    Didn't see any water nipples on the rectifier....maybe I'm wrong.

    Not aware of a rectifier gasket....if there is one it's there to keep it cooler I'm guessing. Use anything really. Still sounds fuel related. Run motor...let it die and check the plugs.
