M5B Prop Shaft Housing - Factory Service Manual…

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to at least see the seal when you manage to get that prop thrust washer off. They are generally taper fit to the prop shaft so they don't rock around in use. I would likely give that a few good whacks using something that will allow you to hit it squarely...

    454 Lifter Adjustment

OK, this goes WAY back- late 60's, early 70's I worked at a Chev. dealership for a few years after graduating high school, quickly coming up through the ranks to "master mechanic" status. BACK THEN, the big blocks used lock nuts on the rocker arm studs (no idea what the newer stuff uses). With...

    Electric power steering

OK, another old time car mechanic here. If there is a relay turning that pump on and off, my bet it there's a pressure switch somewhere in that system that lets it work without running the pump constantly. That pressure switch might be mechanically activated or hydraulic. In either case, I think...

    Need towing advice

A lot of 28' toons are I/O powered. That would darn sure make a difference in what the proper trailer looked like. Same story is transporting with a motor installed, or no? I've pulled pontoons all over creation and the biggest thing I can share is that they pull like a parachute. I would plan...

    Motor opinion

Again, the point is being mixed with other info. One more shot and I'm done. ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL, when it comes to the factory suggested compression numbers ("why is the V6 compression passing the bar at a 10# lower pressure than an inline") my WAG would have to do with the difference in...

    Motor opinion

I started reading through that, until I realized it had so many pages, and any one of them might contain the point you're making. Now thinking maybe I wasn't clear on my point. The difference in volume I'm talking about is as supplied by the original design. Not "what it could be" in the hands...

    Motor opinion

Well, I'd venture a wild guess. Wondering if it might involve crankcase volume? The V6 being a little larger. One thing for sure, the higher you can get the crankcase pressure running at, the more compression you're going to see.

    Motor opinion

Right next to where it says low compression numbers should be verified with another compression tester, and compression tests should be done with the throttles wide open.... Facts are easy to find. Experience maybe not so much....

    Who has installed Helicoils ?

Sea Rider, working with stuff run in the salt, I get in to this situation on occasion (too often actually). Early on, I USED to try and fix them. Have been the Helicoil route on a head bolt a few times, with mixed results (tried using the head for a drill guide trick too). I got tired of rolling...

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

They have solar powered vents. Likely won't work with a pile of snow on them, but might help out otherwise.

Engine smell in cabin when boat is tarped for the week (350 i/o)

I'm wondering about your bilge blower/venting situation. Is it possible your canvas is covering the intake or exhaust side of that up?

    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

My work is mostly Honda, but I can share that I've never seen a timing belt related issue. Nothing. Not even the idler pulley, going back to even their earliest designs. Good thing too, as we both know what's going to happen with a failure there. Further, the engines I see most are generally...

    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

Right, controversial. I'll leave that be as well. ;^) But making the case for older 4 stroke motors for use in freshwater MUCH MUCH easier. Pontoon boat owners are absolutely crazy over them.

New (Out of Box) BF20D Over Heating

Same thought here. The engine could be 20 years old. If so, the fact he had it on muffs may have had nothing to do with the failure.....

Engine won't reach max RPM under load

Do as you like, but I like checking the easy/most likely stuff first. I'm with Matt above. It's likely starving for fuel beyond a certain point. When that point is reached, it starves, creating issues. Below this point, it runs fine. If you have an extra fuel tank and line available, start...

    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

As somebody that's changed quite a few Honda 4 stroke head gaskets, I'm going to stick my neck out here and say you'd have to be a magician to change one in 30 minutes. I think it might take 30 minutes (or most likely longer than 30 minutes) to just clean the head and block well enough (remove...

New (Out of Box) BF20D Over Heating

Honda is generally sold by generation. Often just minor differences in the build. Pretty much impossible, or nearly so, to decipher year sold from the serial number. If old age took the pump out, it would be in pieces. If low/no water pressure took it out, it would be melted. I mention that to...

New (Out of Box) BF20D Over Heating

Glad to hear you found your issue. I was pretty sure this was going to be an easy one. FYI though, if the impeller was in pieces, it was likely shot (due to old age) when you first fired it up. Though low water pressure supplying muffs likely didn't help a thing, if that were the cause of the...

New (Out of Box) BF20D Over Heating

I would try blowing into the pee hole. It is hooked up right? If that produces nothing, I'd look to see if it has a water pump impeller installed, looks new or not.

Install additional fuel vent hose into existing line?

Agreed. NO low points that might allow gas to pool in the vent line. You want to run the vent line so gas will either run toward the filler, or the tank.
