Knocking sound - what is it? [video]

I wouldnt install that gasket. Not only are you losing power due to restricting the exhaust ports, but you will likely blow the new one in short order as well. May take a bit of research to find the right gasket, but that is what needs to be done. A previous owner may have changed manifolds to...

    Exhaust Bellows or Not

no, this was a chinesium set. Im keeping a VERY close eye on the u-joint bellows for issues. Didnt want to spring for the "expensive" factory bellows before making sure the rest of the boat ran.... cheapo parts for the cheapo boat. make sure it runs properly, and then replace with good ones when...

    Exhaust Bellows or Not

The bellows is a pain the backside to properly get on both sides. The tube works just fine for most applications. In my case, the exhaust bellows has enough splits in it to render it useless (its a year old FFS).... Im not in a hurry to replace it, until I do the u-joint bellows next year (I...

    Gimbal Bearing Alignment/Installation Tool Question

Need to replace a janky gimbal bearing. I have the tool, but its not drilled for the installation mandrel, that is left to the "installer" to deal with. What I need to know is where on the shaft does the hole get drilled to put that part on? I checked the FAQ section, but I did not find this...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

not to crap on the site host, but Marine engine.com has had pretty good exploded diagrams for anything I have needed for searching for part numbers and such. The ones for Mercruiser are good, the ones for OMC/Volvo appear to be pretty good as well.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I for one wish you good luck, and hopefully you can get it cleaned up with a minimum of work. We wouldnt do that this side of the pond, but then again, we have Ford and Chevy engines available much more readily and cheaply than you have access to.

losing forward gear after running a while

well, had a chance to actually look in the engine bay, and I have a confirmed kill.... the cable sheath came out of the ferrule at the top end of the lower shift cable...... Chinesium crap strikes again..... Now to buy a genuine Mercruiser one.....

losing forward gear after running a while

Having a REALLY annoying issue with the drive on my boat (1980 Merc 120 with MC (? its factory....) drive) when first starting out at the lake, or testing at home, I have forward and reverse, no issues at all. Push the side control forward, or rear to the detent, and it engages just fine, no...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

that engine has been around the block at least 2x at this point. Your pistons are .040 oversized, and who knows if the crank has been ground. If it needs a refresh, you may well be better off with another motor. I dont know what max oversize for the 302 is, but i think .060 is about all you can...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

60 pounds to get the engine professionally checked is to me, at least a bargain. At least then you know what you are working with, and arent playing the "what if" game.

    1977 140 carb replacement

one of these will adapt your small base manifold to large base carbs..... I went down this route earlier this year with my carb.... the small base units are unobtanium in marine trim new, everyone uses the large base carbs...

    Busiest day of the year

the boat is safely on its trailer in the driveway, and the family and I will enjoy the fireworks from the back porch..... too many idiots on a normal weekend, dont need to compound that with the once a year crowd that really gets stupid

    MR-1 U Joint Bellows Leak

shifter should be straight fore/aft when in forward gear, this allows it to slide right together.

What to use to patch hole on hull of Aluminum Boat

A proper way to repair would be to either have it welded, or have a patch riveted over it with a permanent sealer (probably 5200) between the two pieces. You can bandaid it with other methods, but you will have to monitor it.

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

The 90 degree fitting on the top of your carb is where the pump drain goes. It’s plainly visible in your first pic

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

with a good rebuild kit (mercrusier preferably) and a little time and knowledge (some of the instructions arent that clear) you will have the better carb. Main thing, take pictures, and get it CLEAN inside. any crap in the passages will cause issues. Time and patience are your freinds.

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

the issue with the Amazon (and other sourced) knockoff carbs is that they are usually poor workmanship and materials. You can try to go with smaller jetting, but that wont help if the castings are leaking, and the gasket surfaces arent flat and true (and therefore dont seal) There can also be...

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

Very likely. Porous castings aren’t unheard of, along with poor workmanship (sealing) the Amazon repops aren’t the best, but the price is good. A reworked oem carb is your best bet

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

Black and sooty is excessive fuel. A vacuum leak will have it run lean, which will give whitish tips to the plugs

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

I would agree, if the pump is specced at the proper 4-7 psi. If however it’s specced closer to 9-10, that’s where I would put in a regulator. OP hasn’t stated if it’s a new pump or the old original that now has an overactive sense of purpose. Either way, he needs to get that rail pressure down some
