Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

ok, I think I know what the issue is.... I did something similar last year when I reassembled my drive (1980 vintage Mercruiser) only mine I couldnt get out of forward..... check this thread out, specifically post #4...

Pre-Alpha drive won't go into reverse.

you may have something out of place where the cable interacts with the bellcrank. Very easy for that to fall out of place when re-installing the drive. If it isnt that, your lower cable may have packed it in and need replacement.

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

I have to agree it comes down to QC, regardless of the country of origin or the manufacturer. The thing is, some countries are known for their "dubious quality" knockoffs and this overshadows the actual quality parts that they can produce. As with most things, it comes down to money. Buy cheap...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yours isnt much crustier looking than mine..... I need to repaint it at some point, 43 years of AZ sun hasnt been kind to the paint. No corrosion, as its freshwater, but with the rest of the hull painted, it looks terrible on the back.....

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yeah, I need one of them!!!!!! just under $300 now, but damn, for what a shop charges, it pays for itself in one go..... not to mention you cant drop the damn thing and chances of screwing up critical parts goes to about nil....

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

yeah, I fought mine for about an hour. I need to break down and get a small cherry picker for the drive. Its an MC-1 so it has the eye on it for a lift..... trying to juggle the shaft into the gimbal, make sure the prop doesnt pop out of gear, ensure the damn water o-ring stays in place, and...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

I would agree with you on the exhaust. OEM is good, but a GOOD aftermarket supplier such as Barr can be better. I dont have the option to store with the drive down. I dont have enough clearance between the drive and the ground for that (hell, I have dragged the leg twice this year when I...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

well, we try to do the best we can..... China CAN make some good parts, if the QC is properly done. Now, when the part is made down the street from the OEM factory from the technical drawings on the back of a napkin, those are the ones that sell for pennies on the dollar to OEM, and cause the...

    Alpha One 3.0 Starter questions

with the Amazon stuff, how long it lasts depends on your environment. If your bilge is dry, and you dont keep the boat on the water, it will last longer than if you run wet, and store it at the lake. This goes for factory parts as well, BUT the mean time before failure on the factory part is...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

I used to be "used boat, cheap parts" and "used car, used parts"..... As I grow older, I have realized that the cost savings isnt worth it long term. When things get interesting is when the OEM is discontinued. My preference then is used OEM. My truck is down right now for fuel pumps. OEM isnt...

FACTORY PARTS..... a bit of a rant....

Ok, this is going to be a bit preachy, and a bit of a rant... USE FACTORY PARTS folks.... I just got done replacing a bunch of cheap Chinesium parts on my boat. These parts have LESS THAN 15 HOURS run time on them. Lower shift cable especially. When old timers say that the Mercruiser part is the...

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

yeah, now I see those...... I was originally going with the tooling that the manual calls out, and that didnt work so well.... I may invest in one of those for next time, BUT if I replace the bearing for cause when I do the bellows, it shouldnt be nearly as stuck next time..... this one had to...

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

well, at long last, the bearing is out. Ended up removing the spherical section out of the outer aluminum housing, and cutting the outer housing with a dremel and a piece of hack saw blade. Once that was done, it still put up a bit of a fight, but about a dozen half hearted whacks with the slide...

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

This is what I was thinking. I have the steel, just hope it doesn’t mar the face of the bell housing as that’s a gasket face isn’t it? (Where the lower abuts is where I was thinking) this does have the benefit of concentrating the force where it needs to be at least

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

I am trying to get it out with a puller and slide hammer as per the manual.

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

No snap ring. Bearing does not appear to be cocked, the outer edge is fairly uniform by the lead in chamfer to the bearing bore. As far as I can tell, this may be the original bearing, so stuck is the name of the game. The two relief cuts face the rear on my bearing, so I may try to pop out the...

    STUCK gimbal bearing.....

started beating on my gimbal bearing yesterday to replace it, and am having NO luck. Searched and found this thread https://forums.iboats.com/threads/gimbal-bearing-removal-trick.704454/ and have used up just about all the good advice in there. I had borrowed a slide hammer set, which had the...

    Gimbal Bearing Alignment/Installation Tool Question

awesome. thats what I needed to know. Ill just bring it into work and get it drilled on the drill press there. I REALLY dont want it all caddywhompus and the damn bolt not go through..... seems you only have one shot at getting it right.....

    Exhaust Bellows or Not

I agree, but couldnt justify the difference in cost if the engine/drive was crap. Now that its all proven good, It will get the good stuff when the crap stuff goes belly up, or at least on a reasonable interval. frequent inspections are the name of the game at this point.....
