The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

Forgive my absurd drawing skills. Due to the corrosion basically destroying that entire area... My intuition would be to cut out the original outer hull piece entirely and replace with a wider piece of aluminum (red pen) that then slides under the cut off original stub (yellow) and gets riveted...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

I wirebrushed some sort of cream colored rubbery like product off the outside of the boat (was thick enough in places to hide the seams of the repair entirely.) And this is what I found: Then after pulling the ORIGINAL 1968 floor...I found this hellish mess on the other side: The aluminum...

Do I have a 'nice' engine?

I don't know on the model number. Does the case decal help? To dark outside right now to check for #s How does it compare to other 70 hps out there of the era? Is it going to do what I ask of it?

Do I have a 'nice' engine?

So I'm quite into cars and motorcycles. I know the various duds each company has put out for engines and the holy grails... But I am entirely new to marine and I don't know a Johnson from an evinrude or any other makes. I've been told by a few people I have a 'nice engine' but I also know...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

Thank you! Another product to go buy. Bwahahaha......marine body techniques have been interesting to learn... The exterior of the transom skin appears to have some black hard as nails (wire wheel was hard pressed to fight with it..) product painted all over it with a brush. I was thinking I...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

I know eye candy is the most important part of a build so here we go. I am still ripping the boat down to bare hull. While I wait for rivets in the mail. Casually working on the aluminum trim while I am waiting. Corners and nose will be polished to mirrors. I have been having difficulty...

1968 aluminum trim on starcraft - how to restore and maintain?

Like the gouge in this pic? I could get that smoothed away no time flat with 400 grit but I have to spend multiple minutes on the corrosion right next to it at 120!!!

1968 aluminum trim on starcraft - how to restore and maintain?

My issue was the corrosion was so deep and I wasn't spending enough time on heavy grit. I have found that sanding with a quality orbital 120 grit for way longer than I really want (this aluminum alloy is harder to sand than the aluminum I'm used too...), Then hit it again with orbital 320...

Where to buy aluminum sheet to patch hull

Title says it all! I need to patch a rip in the hull and I don't know where to get a sheet of appropriate aluminum. Did some searching to no avail. Is there something specifically sold for this? Or so I need to know gauge, specific alloy, etc

1968 aluminum trim on starcraft - how to restore and maintain?

So I've got myself ALOT of aluminum trim and edging and such on this boat and it's all there, but has to be sanded back... I'm thinking I sand it all back 400 grit to get pits and any scrapes out. Then sand it 800, then wetsanded 1000 directionally. I'll use a scuff pad to give it a nice...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

The boat will never catch a fish again. The intention is a pleasure boat that can haul some kids on tubes when need be. The water fill method on the trailer seems infinitely easier....though I understand the overloaded trailer concern. I attached a few shots of how it's currently sitting. The...

Multiple cracks and hole under bow line eye hook - 16' aluminum ski boat - please advise!

I am unsure of the best method of a long lasting STRONG repair for this...looks also matter. My thought is to drill the ends of every crack, add a new piece of aluminum patch over it all and apply with gluvit and new solid rivets... If I very carefully cut back the extra metal at the end of...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

Alright. Here is what I have ordered to repair and waterproof the hull. Please let me know if I am missing anything I need to do a better job of it. I own alot of automotive tools, so if any of those come in handy let me know... 2117t4 rivets on the way 3/16 x 7/16 as well as 3/16 x 3/8. 200...

5056 rivets vs 2117tv rivets for 5052 aluminum hull

Ended up finding a decent selection of the 2117t4 rivets on ebay instead of the 500 piece mega packs on amazon. I found some papers that suggest that starcraft used 5056 rivets originally, but it was not clearly stated. The only argument I keep seeing being made against 2117t4 is that they may...

5056 rivets vs 2117tv rivets for 5052 aluminum hull

Hello all! Very unknowledgeable but also meticulous...makes life hard! I am looking to replace many solid hull rivets on the bottom side of a Starcraft 16 ft super sport. I have found conflicting information on the appropriate rivets to use. 5056 rivets seem to be readily available on Amazon...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

The trailer is not set up properly for this boat. I will be fixing that up after I get the boat off it and turtled for painting. Not to concerned there as it seems pretty basic automotive. Came from Suffer NY and now lives with me in MA.

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

INTRODUCTION! I am completely novice to boats and have been overwhelmed with learning new jargon and marine repair techniques. This has been made more difficult by the huge variety in repair methods (and huge variety in repair quality...). What's going for me is that I have ALOT of mechanical...
