Serious question about boat restoration and thurst for beer.

I just put in about 6 hours on the Batboat today and it is almost midnight. For the life of me I am having a hard time resisting going to the bar for a few drinks. Maybe I will resist long enough until it closes. This happened before after long days of working on the boat and it got me...

Gaps between my new deck and the hull questions.

Weather permitting, I will have two sections of the deck glassed in the boat tomorrow or whenever. However, the deck plys do not perfectly fit snug in it. There are places that have up to an inch gap. What I am planning to do is glass the CSM and woven right across with no dips...

    decades old trailer suspension issues

My trailer seems to be about about 35 - 40 years old and looks like it never got any maintenance. One of the things I am concerned about is the condition of the o-ring type things the bolts pass through in the suspension, as pictured in the attachments. Do these need replacing? If so, what...

Are there new transom mounts that look like '60s Glastrons?

I have a 1969 Glastron boat and want '60s style transom mounts for tie downs. I found this at iboats.com but it says not for use in transoms. http://www.iboats.com/Attwood_Single_Shank_Bow_Eyes/dm/*******.658185662--**********.571958575--view_id.2488 Can anyone suggest a good quality set of...

warming up old rubrail makes it soft and pliable again

My rubber rubrail piece is coiled up while I work on the boat. It is very stiff and I have a hard time inserting it back into the aluminum. However, while working on my boat recently it sat directly in the hot sun. The heat made parts of it soft again. I was able to get it back into place...

How much of oz. cloth do I need to glass stringers in?

I have a small 14 foot boat. There are four stringers. The small ones are no more than 1 to 1 1/2 inch high. The tall ones are about four or five inches at the highest point. I am using one layer of 1708, which is 25 oz. of cloth. Glastron originally used two wovens layers and one CSM...

14ft outboard. Why was the deck made higher on the driver's side?

I am going to bed in my stringers tomorrow... well, that was until I looked over the hull and original placing of the stringers very closely. I have a 1969 Glastron V-145. A 14 foot boat outboard. I sat the 4 stingers perfectly spaced inside the hull in preparation to anchor them in with PL...

How to make a new bilge in the deck under the splashwell?

I kept everything of importance to my 1969 Glastron V-145 after I tore it apart. Well... except for the bilge. Since that went out with the other trash over a year ago the only thing I have to go by is a few pictures like this one. From measuring the hull, the bilge in the photo...

can someone post an example of PVC in the bottom of a hull to aid drainage??

I am getting close to where I can finally put the deck in. Will bed in the stingers with PL adhesive tomorrow, weather permitting. One 11th hour question, however. People talk about putting a long PVC pipe along the lowest point of the hull, from the bow to the transom, to aid in water...

One last question about glassing in my deck, with diagram

I am going to have my stringers bedded in by Wednesday. The deck will soon follow. Here is my understanding on how to laminate the deck into the hull. First I cut the plys to size, coat the underneath with a couple coats of poly resin with wax and let it set. Then screw those plys to the...

How many deck braces do I use on my stringers? See photo.

I am getting ready to put in my new stringers. New resin was just ordered and is on its way. In the meantime I have a problem. The old stringers were mostly rotted out. I was able to get a good pattern off them except for the position of the wood that gets screwed in perpendicular. I do not...

Fiberglassing with two cloths? Once at a time or both at once?

Now after I have done a lot of fiberglassing something occurred to me and I have a question. When using two different types of cloth can I 1) laminate one cloth on one day and the other the next? OR 2) do both get glassed in at the same time? On my transom ply I glassed on 1.5 oz CSM. On...

    Putting new "eyes"on my Batboat.

Time is coming close for me to replace the eyes on the Batboat and move the dashboard back one foot. It is a one piece job so all happens at once. I have most of it figured out but need some input on laminating in the eyes. As you can see from the Burt Ward photo below, the side of the eyes...

Did I evaporate my aluminum fiberglass roller!?!??!

I wanted to burn off resin that filled in the spaces of my fiberglass roller last night so I took the aluminum roller off the handle and put it in my bonfire. I don't have a butane torch and the friend who does lives 15 minutes away. This morning I sifted through the ashes and no roller. I...

Did I get the correct woven cloth for my deck?

One last question for the evening. :) Did I buy the correct woven cloth for my deck? What I ordered last year was 5 yards of 6 oz HEXCEL. http://www.fiberglasssite.com/servlet/the-Fiberglass-Cloth-cln-6-oz-cloth-36%22/Categories Under this will be a layer of CSM 1.5 oz to bond it to the...

glassing in my stringers. How does this look to you guys?

I will probably have the stingers in the boat this week. Here is how I plan to do it. Does it look like a good plan or would another layer of another type of cloth be needed? I just want to be 100% sure. Once they go in I'm not redoing them!:D

Am I using too much resin??

I have a 14 foot boat that I gutted out. So far I laminated in the transom into the hull, coated the stringers and glassed 1.5 oz mat on the stringer boards. The stringers are not in the boat yet. It looks like as of the time I started up into today I'ved used 5 gallons of tooling Polyester...

Grass in my fiberglass cloth okay?

I had to spread out my roll of fiberglass mat to cut strips in the shape of my stringers today. Did it on the sidewalk in front of my house and got grass clippings in it that are hard to get out. Is it okay that there are little specks of green in there? I am assuming it is but want to check...

Fiberglass dust. Do I need to clean up every speck of it???

The Batboat is completely gutted out. Already have the transom in and the stringers and deck will follow after I biaxial in the spots where I ground some of the old glass down to the gel coat. I did a great deal of grinder work in the hull and blew the vast majority of the glass dust out with...

I tried to keep this as clean as I could but my aluminum fberglass roller is clogged with hard resin. Is there any way to get it out of the grooves? I have another, smaller roller on hand but can't find a replacements anywhere locally. :(
