Extending the life of liquid poly resin?

Okay. A few days ago the weather has dropped to the point where I can no longer glass the boat until spring. Happened over night. Meanwhile, I have 3/4 a gallon of poly resin sitting here that probably won't survive that long. Can I keep this outside in the cold to slow the chemical process...

How should my boat rest on the trailer bunks??

I have a 14 foot fiberglass Glastron V-145 built in '69 with a trailer that has a carpeted bunk on each side to the rear and middle rollers. The trailer may or may not be original to the boat and the boat mostly sits on the middle rollers and leans on one bunk. There is a 1 1/2 inch gap...

Best way to join two plys when making a stringer??

I have my stringers cut for the Batboat and coated with polyester resin. :) The longest of the two originals I pulled out of the boat are 12 foot and my ply is 8 foot long so I had to cut them out in two parts. One section is 8 foot and the other 4 foot. Both have about 4 inches overlap...

Small gap inbetween the plys of my new transom. Please advise!

Well, I finally did fiberglassing on the boat today. I covered the stringers with polyester resin and they are drying nicely. However, there is a problem with the transom. It hasn't been put in the boat yet. Just just laminated the two peices together. There is a small gap along the top...

Screwing the deck to the stringers VS just laying it on top.

Looks like I will be able to get started on the Batboat Tuesday, however, I have a couple of questions about the deck. "Runabout Renovation" says to stainless steel screw the decking plywood down on the stringers. However, I've read somewhere on the net just to lay the wood in and glass it...

Best way to remove paint from this metal ID plate??

I want to fix up my 1969 Glastron V-145's identification plate without ruining it. This thin metal plate has the model and serial number stamped into it and is covered with paint. The metal is very maleable and thin. I am afraid that I may etch or ruin it completely if I soaked it in Acetone...

Deck delima. I can't find anything but Pine exterior ply!!!

Okay. This is getting fustraiting. I spent the afternoon traveling to all the specialty wood places in my county and found nothing but pine exterior. All the exterior ply here is pine and nothing else!!! :( I decided to use only 3/4 inch ply for the new deck (the original was 1/4 inch)...

Using waxed poly on the underside of a deck will help keep it water tight?

Just a thought here. If I put a second coat of waxed Poly on the underside part of the ply, will the wax help guard against condensation? Or will there not be much of a difference in the waterproofing? I am a few hours away from ordering my resin! :p

Looking for definitive info on glassing a transome to my particular boat

Hello, all, Winter is coming on fast and I need help before it gets too cold to glass. :( Here is where I am at. I ground off the old, rotted transom off my boat and have several problems / questions that I need help with before I feel confident in replacing it. The first is that I am...

Top of my transom is curved. Can I make the new one straight?

I just made a pattern for the new transom wood that is going in. On my 1969 V-145, I see that the top of the stern has a "dip" shape to it. Can I make the new one so it goes strait across? The old transom had a lot of epoxy stuff just built up on the low points and the splash well that gos...

is Bondo Fiberglass Resin and mat glass any good?

I just came back from a trip to the big box hardware store and saw a Bondo fiberglass resin kit. It is this one and was $34. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=6119&NEXTAG They also have Bondo mat glass. My question is this. I want to start on laminating in...

Solid Fur or marine ply fur for stingers? Which?

I have been pondering the costs of my fixing up the Batboat. Progress has been slow because of the weather and funding. (I recently had my identity stolen and now want to pay for things with cash in hand.) The next thing I need to do is replace stringers and transom. The one sheet of Marine...

Gap I should have between the transome and edges of the hull?

I am close to grinding out the rest of the transome area and before I make the template I need to know how much of a gap should I allow between the parameter of the new transome wood and the hull? What do I fill in the gap with? Do I pack it with chopped glass and epoxy? Or do I cut the wood...

removing sharpie marker from marine vinyl??

I was making the pouches for my utility belt today out of 3/4 inch thick, 4 inch square plywood and marine grade yellow vinyl. I put the spray adhesive on the wood and married it with the vinyl and very lightly clamped them with another block of wood. Unfortunately, some Sharpie writing on the...

When I put in the new transome what is the best way to replace the bilge drain hole? What metal piece do I need to line the new hole with?

Damage I did to my hull. Should I worry?

Yesterday I dismantled the Batboat and damaged the hull. The original floor was rotted so a previous owner wood screwed plywood on top. That was rotted, too, and some of the screws were rusted. To help get it out I pryed with a hammer claw. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that I was also...

    Batboat rebuild project.

I just spent 4 hours dismantling the Batboat. About one hour was devoted to removing 5 screws! Despite that, boat restoring doesn't seem as hard as it looks. Time to eat dinner. I'll post more later.

Do I have to epoxy the floor up before or during putting in a DecoDot floor?

    Epoxy and ... Fleece?

I am going to start to repair and rebuild the Batboat soon and an interesting thing was on TV today. Guys in a custom auto shop were making car trunk subwoofer boxes out of a plywood frame, fleece was stretched and stapled around then set with fiberglass epoxy! This was an epiphany! I need to...

Should I worry about getting much water in my boat?

I hope to be able to get started on the Batboat in the next few weeks but am worried about one thing I read a lot about here; getting water in the boat. Not from leaks but from it coming in from over the deck from normal boating. There is going to be no place to walk around in the boat when I...
