Good old compass can bail you out. When I was a teenager I worked on a stone crab boat. We got fogged in on Tampa Bay one day and couldn’t see more than 20 or 30 feet. Cap pulled out the charts and plotted our course home.

Noting wrong with Sierra in my eyes. Go through again and see what you can find. For what is worth I have seen them leak from an unvented tank that is in the sun. The pressure can overwhelm the needle and seat sometimes. Not sure if that’s what happened in your case.

OEM carb kit? Fuel spilling out is usually a stuck float. Cheap kits are not always good and have mismatched parts. Float level set correctly?

Well it’s good your stain was dry.

A clean piston like that is usually caused by water intrusion. Look at the head gasket and see if you can tell if it was leaking. And yes a new head gasket is always the way to go.
