the 470 design was OK....ish, the execution was flawed the good - aluminum block, high torque and heat exchanger the head should have been aluminum - iron head on an aluminum block is just wrong. the deck should never have been open - the bores move about a bit the stator and regulator should...

Entire electrical system dies when under way

I would start at the battery and check every connection (both power and ground) all the way to the helm and every thing that receives electrons. a melted switch means that there was a really really really bad connection and the arcing of the connection caused enough heat to actually cause a fire.

Fuel pressure too high, how to fix? Small block GM V8

Holley or carter 2-port fuel pressure regulator. Holley p/n 12-803 or Carter 404501HP most of them have zinc coated hardware. however a rattle can of engine paint takes care of that. at 12 psi, the motor wont run cold or warm as the carb would be dumping fuel down the intake.

OMC 250 hp rough idle, back fires through carb on load

fuel lasts 6-12 months. Stabilizer at the most can extend that up to 6 months. if you have a floor to varnish, you have a tank full of it.

what is the dwell set to on the points? what does the fuel look like? two reasons to backfire thru the carb. dwell and timing is off, or the carb is gummed up and its running lean

Ok a question about points systems….

battery only voltage is always lower than alternator voltage. thats why when the engine is running, the voltage increases..... (and lights get brighter, and fans run faster, etc) its also why the coil voltage was 5.2 on battery only and went up to 9.6 volts.

377 mag mpi dts Hard start after the first time

these two sentences are a dichotomy. if the voltage is dropping while cranking to 10.5 with one battery or two batteries, the issue is either the ground lug on the block or the power connection at the starter, or the ground and power at the cannon plug.
