    Back up motor?

Thanks for a heads up on the weedless sounds like it will be even slower than the traditional 4 hp. I might need to look for a 6 short If I decide to keep the short shaft motor to get back upstream

    Back up motor?

My boat has a long transom 20”. I think I’ll take them both out this spring and see which meets my needs the best.

    Back up motor?

I have a little Johnson 4 hp weedless motor I just bought that hasn't seen water yet . I also have a 6 hp long shaft motor that I've had on the back on my boat once or twice 6 pushes pretty good. I like the little weight of the 4. I wasn’t sure if a 2 hp would push upstream or not

    Back up motor?

I have a 16x54 Jon boat I take on the river often. My 30 lb thrust trolley motor won’t push upstream. What is the smallest motor y’all think I can put on my boat as a back up and still push upstream? Thanks in advance! Rob

    Any fixing this?

I ordered the metal one and it works. There is a slight difference. It still starts the motor. I would recommend replacing the plastic part with another plastic part however. The teeth between the gear and fly wheel sits about 1/8" lower than before.

I am still pretty new to outboards so forgive me if I miss something. A good spark gap checker not one of those $5 light up things from three parts store but something to actually make sure your motor has STRONG spark. In my experience spark is the issue 8-9 times out of 10 when one won’t...

    Surging Johnson 6 hp.

There is no reason to. You are absolutely right. This is a good learning moment for me. I didn't think running in a barrel at WOT was probably a great idea but I also didn't consider it to be a big deal. I have been educated to now know otherwise. Thank y'all for the insight.

I am 99.9% sure I got the issue resolved. It was the fuel pump. For some reason both of the fuel pumps I had worked well on the 4 hp but not on the 6 hp. I tried starting the motor again and squeezed the ball just barely. It was like fuel pumps I've had that have failed in the past were you can...

you are exactly right! and this was foolish on my part. I wanted you guys to see the issue I was having with the motor at full throttle. It was doing this last fall on the water underload. I had forgot about it until I tried firing it up the other day.

I have an idea, and let me know if this seems reasonable. My parents have a 1974 Evinrude fisherman with a carb that I rebuilt that idles flawlessly. I am thinking of taking the carb off that motor to see if my Johnson will run properly with a different carb on it.

I started at 1 and 1/2 turns out and worked out from there. These 6 hp motors are normally pretty easy to get set, and they normally have really nice idles to them. This 6 hp motor seems to be stubborn, and not want to dial in for some reason. I sure it is user error, but not sure what i'm doing...

I did unscrew and clean the high speed post. It has 3 tiny holes that are all completely cleared out. The high speed post and that high speed orifice are both completely cleaned out and look perfect.

Tank Vent was open all the way. Thank you for the update on the barrel. I have a 55 gallon barrel I got out of the backyard to run the motor in. I am testing in that barrel now. She wants to sputter out and die at idle.

Choke is working just fine. I cleaned the carb and haven’t put the knob back yet. I was just doing it by hand Incase I had to take choke back off.

I’m am not good at technology but here is a video. I moved the motor to my big barrel after this but the video didn’t save for whatever reason

Y’all have been great as always! I have only done the following few things to check out this motor this time around 1. Cleaned the entire carb again including the bowl high speed orifice. 2. Bought new fuel and mixed it properly at 50:1. (I didn’t test it honestly never have even thought of...
