    I'm going to replace the coupler and purchase a new starter, the old starter worked effortlessly but I need to be pro active as this is a boat and the starter looks pretty dam old and has seen it's better days.

    The Engine was removed, and as I suspected some coupler bolts were loose or not tightened enough on the flywheel. Further, The 2 rear motor mount bolts were rusted solid. We tried effortlessly to remove them, but to no avail. So we had to seperate the engine from the rear flywheel housing to get...

    Tomorrow the engine is coming out. Hopefully it's just some loose flywheel bolts.

    Did a compression test today: Cylinder 4 - 150 Cylinder 3 - 150 Cylinder 2 - 165 Cylinder 1 - 145 Pretty darn good for a 1985 Mercruiser 140.

    Yes no doubt. I'll know soon enough when she's pulled. I hope it's just some loose bolts that loctite can't fix perhaps. Anyways it will be done correct whatever is necessary.

    I just found this video on YouTube with the same knocking sound as mine, and it's almost identical. The poster said it was his coupler. Needless I'm going to remove the engine and inspect the flywheel also.

    Water flapper was missing from inside the riser, so that wasn't the knocking sound, needless I'm gonna have to get a replacement.

    I'm going to double check the cylinders to see if they are all firing, I'll also do a compression test and check out the timing...Couldn't hurt before I pull it

    Hey man thanks so much for that info, after all the research I was suspecting a flywheel also. FWIW The engine coupler was clean and drive shaft spline was good, the alignment was fine as well So I guess I can count out a coupler hopefully. Needless the engine has to be removed anyway.

    FWIW I actually cleared out all the heavy rust in the elbow exhaust riser and the knocking changed slightly. I'm trying everything before yanking the engine. I'll pull the starter and see how flywheel is also. Timing and octane boost is next. I'm going to pickup an alignment tool also. To see...

    This is a fairly new block with only 40 hrs or so on it. The original owner had replaced the block, and he only used it for a short period of time. So methinks not a lower bearing. Just saying.

    Mercruiser alpha one knocking noise

    Can anyone advise what this could be. Outdrive was removed after the video, and still makes the same noise. Coupler splines were fine also.
