Where are the rear motor mounts on a mercruiser 120?

@1960 Starflite Here's the trick below to removing the rear motor mount bolts. My engine is a 1985 Merc 140 Alpha One Gen One. **Make sure you soak the hell out of the motor mount bolts with a good penetrating oil. Liquid wrench, Kroil, PB Blaster etc.. Keep soaking it every so often as...

Mercruiser Sterndrive Gear Oil Leaking by Prop

I have a gear oil leak coming from the propeller. When I removed the Leg last week, it wasn't leaking. I went to put it back on yesterday, and noticed it was pissing oil everywhere by the prop. I'm assuming it's a seal. Question: Is this a hard job to tackle by a newbie? I have some mechanical...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Your 100% Correct. I was mislead by my local boat shop. We had to raise the ingine at least half an inch for the alignment. The bar went all the way in perfectly.... Tommorw I will try installing the sterndrive... I tried installing the drive today after the alignment, but it was a little...

Where are the rear motor mounts on a mercruiser 120?

If your having problems removing the rear motor mount bolts (inbox me) I can definitely give you some crucial advice. I recently removed my 1985 mercruiser 140hp last week, it was a real pain in the effing ass, but I eventually got the bolts out with that dang nut that's located under the rear...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

My bar goes in about an inch and a quarter into the coupler. It then bottoms out at the gimbal bearing.

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

What happens is my alignment bar bottoms out on the actual gimbal bearing going into the coupler about an inch and 1/4, maybe I have the wrong bar. Anyhow I'll see if the sterndrive goes on today. I'll advise.

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

In what I heard today from two skilled Mercruiser Mechanics were, when the alignment tool goes in and bottoms out at the gimbal bearing, and then turns easily with two fingers, the alignment is done. It doesn't matter how much it goes into the coupler. One mechanic said an inch into the coupler...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Update - I just spoke with a local reputable Boat shop mechanic with over 50 years experience, he said that if the alignment tool goes in fine and then bottoms out to the Gimbal bearing, that it's aligned. To my understanding i thought I had to go all the way into the coupler with that alignment...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Does anyone know how to check if the gimbal bearing is in the correct place? Is there a length or some type of measurement etc from the bearing to the outside of the bell housing?

The Rear motor mounts are all new, with new bushings, felt washers, etc. It mounted up rather nicely.

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

We Inspected the studs going from the cam to the flywheel, and then onto to the coupler,, they looked fine. The coupler was put back on with loctite this time as I can only assume it wasn't, prior to when it was rebuilt. If I can reset the gimbal bearing or align it, I'll run it with the leg on...

The Splines actually looked good, when I put the coupler back on. I guess I should of taken a few pics I suppose. Again, I'm new at this.

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

If this matters or makes a difference,,,, I went out in the water several times after I rescued the boat from the driveway without doing any work on it, except for rebuilding the carburetor. The coupler bolts got loose later on, not right away. And there weren't any issues or warnings. This...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Unfortunately I really don't want to remove the engine again to inspect the coupler, unless there's another way...Maybe a borescope perhaps? The outdrive and coupler worked flawlessly, except for the issue I had with the coupler being loose making that knocking sound. Here was my original...

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

@dubs283 , no I don't have any pics of the coupler. For what it's worth, the boat was sitting in a driveway covered, for about 12 years unused. Maybe that's why the leg was hard to get off?

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

The first stage or node of the bar where it enters, went in about an inch, with respect to the witness mark, if that makes sense. The coupler was inspected, and is not worn,, but again the leg was hard to get off originally... So that had me thinking that something was up prior....
