    Testing thermostat with torch

Question. If I apply heat directly to the metal part of the overheat warning switch (switch removed from cylinder head ) should I be able to sound the warning horn? Heat from a heat gun.

2001 johnson 35 hp 3 cylinder trim noise

Anyone know this knocking sound on trim down operation? I tilted all the way up, checked fluid level. Makes noise on down trim. Previous owner put in a new trim motor which appears to work fine.

3 cylinder 35 hp water holes sealant?

Thanks all good info there. Still a little confused though. Manual says rtv around each of the 3 water passages. So that means no sealant used on all those tiny holes correct?

3 cylinder 35 hp water holes sealant?

Manual says to apply 1/16 bead of ge rtv around each water passage on the cylinder. I see the three bigger passages but what about all these tiny passages? The tiny holes are on the block only. No matching holes for those on the head surface. Anyone have the answer? And what is ge rtv? Can I...

    2001 johnson 35 hp 3 cylinder

Well found the issue. Owner told me the pump was changed 2 years ago and it actually produced a decent telltale but looking here lol. Only found the tip of one impeller fin. Rest look like they were smeared into oblivion inside the impeller cup.

    Testing thermostat with torch

I do have another question. Looks like the temp sensor moved away from the head from the heat. Do I leave it alone or replace it? I didn't see any water dripping from it

    Testing thermostat with torch

Possible the head may have been off and makes sense the rtv may have spread out to those little holes. Thanks. I'll keep digging

    Testing thermostat with torch

I don't see them listed on parts diagram. Shop manual says rtv around 3 water ports. I'm assuming the 3 my fingers and thumb are pointing to? But what about all those tiny holes? Nothing seals them?

Any idea what these tiny little seals around the small water ports are? Nothing is listed for that in the parts diagram.

    Testing thermostat with torch

I pulled the head. Looks pretty good to me. I guess I'll drop the lower. Here's some pics with head off. Anyone know if o rings for head are reusable? Also seems to be some kind of seal around each tiny water opening? See photos

New thermostat in. Same issue. Removed plastic thermostat housing from head. Started engine. No water coming out of gaping head hole. Just steam??

    Testing thermostat with torch

I know I should drop it in water but any harm heating the end of the thermostat with butane torch to see if the tip moves?

I looked at the parts diagram for my model number. No tip shown. Only the one built into the brass thermostat

So the black flexible tip on one end of the thermostat is normal?

    2001 johnson 35 hp 3 cylinder

I put water into both the large canal where the screwdriver is pointing as well as the small rectangular area using a hose to put the water in there. Both tests resulted in the water quickly making it's way down and out the prop hub. Sound promising?

Is that tip supposed to be attached to the thermostat? Would that make it stick closed?
